t1's who have kids

i was just wondering about those who have kids if you limit the sugar intake your kids consume or if you splurge them.i let mine pretty much have the sugar they want within reason. i was dx at 10 so i know i wished i had more sugar while i could.

Hi Christie: Well. you are not alone there, kids just have a natural craving for sugar. I was dxd at age 3 but I remember
before that a couple of my aunt and uncles used to sneak me a few candies in when they visited(they knew sugar was not regular at our house since my 2 older bros were dxd at age 4),
so they felt sorry for me. I know the odd sugar here and there did not cause my Diabetes.
I have always fed my kids healthy food and did not encourage excessive candy or sweets. Even during the holidays. I'd let them choose 3 candies, or small bars, rolls, etc. out of their stash plus a bag of chips to eat each day. After 1 1/2 months the rest went in the garbage. When I was about 8 I caught onto my Bros trick of buying some candy at the store near our school with their allowance once a week. Kids love sweets. At least there is better testing methods today for kids so they can inject. Back then my Mom(God love her) just played it by ear.

P.S. When my kids went to school I'm sure they had pop, etc at school, since healthy lunches can be boring and uncool. They are adults now and I still make comments sugar and carb-wise and test them weekly. I know it is not an A1C test but I have seen no symptoms yet.

I think I have always had a sweet tooth, even from when I was a baby. My Mom told me that I alwasys wanted apple juice, and I used to cry for it if I didn't get it. Obviously, now I know that wasn't the best thing for me. From that point on, I think i craved sugar. I remember eating it by the spoonful, when I was a child ( sorry, i know that's gross ). I remember family telling me that I was going to get Diabetes. Little did I know that they would be right , though I didn't think so at the time. I don't think neither they or I realized that it is an autoimmue disease, but I stil wonder if all that sugar and sweets I ate and craved had anything to do with me being diabeti
c today.

My 2 kids, although adopted (and now grown), grew up in a house with very few available sweets. Diet pop, very little in the way of baked goods such as cakes, cookies, etc., and generally healthy choices. My will-power has always been hit-and-miss, so I've relied on not having to battle against bad food choices--my wife has always been supportive about us just not having sweets in the house. My kids have, therefore, been amazed as they grew older, at what **** other families had in their kitchens, and how much of it they ate! Althought my daughter is finishing college, and my son is in high school, and they have been known to binge on candy, cookies, etc., they are generally much more moderate and conscious about their food intake than their peers. I attribute this to their growing up in a "diabetic home", if there is such a thing. Something good did come out of all this!

i will let my kids have some sugar things, candy, cookies.i do limit the amout they are allowed to have.it seems funny though that mine will like the sugar free things that i buy for myself, candy or popsicles,i guess that i had those things while pregnant that they seem to enjoy those now.but of course they do like the regular sugar things,as long as its not overboard.

My wife and I try to teach good eating habits in general. We have a 7 year old that would, most of the time, rather eat an apple or some strawberries than have a candy bar. My 19 month old is another story. He loves carbs, eats very few vegies, and loves juices of all kinds. My wife has always struggled with her weight, and her mother has T2 so we have been trying to eat better. However, she will still sit down to a dozen Krispie Kreme doughnuts and leave me just 1 or 2! Anyone from the south of the US knows how yummy a krispy kreme is, but oh so bad for you!!!!
Teach them to eat well, but don't keep things from them and they will make good decisions thoughout their lives.

am1977 -- I think it's interesting what you said. My parents always threatened me with diabetes, too. There are no cases of diabetes in my family. At age 27, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

You can't imagine the guilt I felt -- thinking I was the one who caused it by eating candy, just like my parents had threatened would happen to me for eating candy. Of course, they had no clue about it being an auto-immune disease, but it's certainly annoying that parents can use non-medically-sound suggestions to their kids.

I think my parents are the reason I went into a scentific biology background. I was on a quest to resolve the strange theories that were given to me while growing up!
