Smile Eureka!

Hi all,

I have posted a few threads where I am asking questions and for once I feel like I can make a contribution. Well, I am a type 1 diabetic still trying to get good control. As of September this year, I am using a PUMP and CGMS. My last A1C was 8.9% which was a drop from 11% three months before that. I am confident that my numbers are on their way down.

Well, I exercise a lot...at least 5 days a week with 2 hours each time. I noticed since getting the PUMP and CGMS that my sugar drops right in the middle of my work outs and SHOTS up right after I am done. I was very irritated to say the least because I hated both the high and the low. After visiting this site and getting some really useful advice about basal testing and all, I started to experiment to see how to avoid the lows and highs.

I DISCOVERED that if I took my last bolus, correction or meal, at least 2-3 hours before I start to exercise then my sugar stays relatively stable during the work out. I also tripled my basal just when I am about to complete my workouts for the next 2 hours to avoid the highs. That worked for me wonderfully. I avoided any lows for the last 2 weeks while I workout and my highs didn't go past 230 when it used to go over 400 after I workout. I still might need to tweak this discovery a bit but am excited to find that it is possible to get my sugars in the normal range throughout the day.

Anyone notice something similar??

That's awesome, I am still struggling to keep my sugar under control when I work out unfortunately, but I am getting better. I am on Humulin 70/30 and Novalog. I tried to take novalog, eat, and then work out. Now, I eat, work out, THEN take novalog and have a snack to balance it out, and it works better for me.
