Question Skipping breakfast (how bad is it?)

I seem to be constantly missing breakfast lately. I either don't feel like eating in the morning or b4 I know it lunch time is on the way anyway so I just wait for that.

My blood sugar levels stay ok, if they're a little low then I will eat something even tho I don't feel like it.

Is it doing me harm missing breakfast so much? should I ever even miss it once? I don't always get a very good lunch either... usually just a snack to keep me going. The silly thing is my blood sugar levels are way better than they were when I stuck to a strict routine.

That's a good question.

I would think if you are on shots and miss breakfast you would go low, but what if you are on a pump?

i miss breakfast a lot..my mom doesn't know that i still do it tho..because i feel sick if i eat in the morning..but i eat something later on at school before lunch usually. when she found out i did that, the nurse at my doctor's office suggest that instead of forcing me to eat a huge breakfast, eat a grain bar you can get at the stores that equals a breakfast, with a glass of milk. i do that sometimes in the mornings and it keeps my blood sugars fine usually.

I would think it might also depend on what your source of vitamins/minerals is? If it is breakfast for that source then
yes you are affecting the way your body regenerates new
cells if they don't have a good supply of all the vitamins/minerals.
Some will rob your stores of vitamins/minerals and thus deplete
your stores in time.

You might want to discuss it further with a dietician also to
make sure that you aren't really harming the way your body
works with secretion of some digestive enzymes, etc.
Breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day
and even if you eat a little it would be better than nothing.
Try one of those low GI strawberry flavored vitamin drinks.
Only 10 carbs/glassful but then your body will get a kickstart
and your cells will have lots of good nourishment to maintain
good healthy cells. Water is also extremely important to keep
those cells cleaning and kidneys working.

This is just my humble opinion.

Everybody has their days when it's not going to fit into their
schedules but try to have something for breakfast on most days.
Your body will thank you years later.<smile>

I am sure enjoying the fact now that I drank lots of milk in my
younger days as my bones are nice and strong. Being a diabetic
thyroid pt. Osteoporosis is a condition which frequently accompanies these after long term of being on thyroid
supplements so perhaps all that milk will help me in the
long run.

Have a nice day.

IF you are on a basal/bolus approach, whether using MDI or pump, then eating is a choice not dependent on diabetes, but on you--time, hunger, health, etc. If you don't eat and you don't bolus, and you are on a peakless basal program, then you should be all right skipping meals. I need breakfast, so I seldom skip it, but I'm almost always busy and not hungry at lunch. I manage lunch maybe twice a week, and it seldom bothers me or affects my sugar levels. Skipping breakfast does have other effects as regards energy levels, etc, but if you feel good, it should not screw up your diabetes control.

I am just like you, Laura. Can't stand eating breakfast, there's nothing worse than having to force-feed yourself at 7 am with your stomach protesting every bite.
I think that Mick has probably said it best (yet again ). If your basal requirements are set correctly then skipping breakfast shouldn't have any negative effect on your BG's. I did it for years while on MDI without any repercussions.
As far as general health, eating breakfast jump-starts your metabolism, which allows one to effectively use food throughout the day for energy. If you find yourself lagging in the late afternoon/evenings, it might be beneficial to eat something small for breakfast, such as a fruit or yogurt. It's also prudent to establish good habits now, while you're young, as your nutritional requirements will change as you age.

I also have troubles with breakfast. I do sometimes eat toast and have a glass of milk. Other times I am really huingry for brkfst. Does it seem to anyone else that if you eat breakfast it makes you very hungry the rest of the day? That happens to me a lot.

Mick and Shy are right.

When going through refresher class, Dietician fussed at those skipping breakfast mostly for general health reasons. Coupled with the fact that your Brain needs a certain amout of carbs to function properly---her advice was to have something even a bit of toast, if nothing else

That being said, I too hate breakfast but do force down a peanut-butter and jelly sandwich on the drive to work every morning.

If I use high fiber, quality bread, PBJ sandwich rings in at 30 gms and that's enough to give me enegy with making me feel full to the gills and lethargic.

I used to be able to eat every morning, couldn't go on until there was food in my belly. Now I get nauseated at the thought of food before 9am. Many cultures usually don't eat any breakfast at all. My mother is Greek, and I remember when I used to go to Greece for the summer that it was very hard to find anything for breakfast other than a bit of toast and yogurt, or bread and jam. I think if you're sugars are running better and you aren't suffering from fatigue or any kind of malnutrition, it's better than always having eratic sugars.

Supposed to say:

If I use high fiber, quality bread, PBJ sandwich rings in at 30 gm and that's enough to give me energy WITHOUT making me feel full to the gills and lethargic

I can't stand going without breakfast. If I don't eat breakfast, I am famished by lunch.

I only ever have breakfast if I know that I am going to be out for the morning/day, if its a 'lazy' day at home, then I don't tend to.

Breakfast jump starts my appetite. Once I have breakfast, I am counting the minutes to lunch, and then to dinner. If I skip breakfast, I can forget about eating. But when I eat, my appetite kicks in rather than being satisfied. I don't wanna hear that I am hungry because I skipped the meal. I am wired wrong, thats why I binge eat once I start eating. I have found many people who will admit the same to me. This is never addressed in the medical community. For years now, I have eaten breakfast and never benefited in terms of increased energy or weight loss. So all those nutrionists that study the benefits of breakfast probably wouldn't allow me in the study. I would ruin their results.
