type 1's, how long did your honeymoon period last?

Hey all type 1's, If you were diagnosed early, how long did it take for you to go from diagnosis to using insulin?

Has anyone been diagnosed with type 1 (early) and never progressed to needing insulin?

How fast did your numbers rise before your honeymoon period was over?

I was diagnosed in May this year and my honeymoon period ended 6 months later when my basal insulin requirement doubled and novorapid increased by 30%.

If so, it would have been a misdiagnosis. Type 1s will require insulin sooner or later. That's why it's called a honeymoon - it sure doesn't last forever.

I was diagnosed late, but I can guess roughly when my BG started to go awry because problems started occurring, but was not diagnosed. Then on DX a few months passed and I was on full strength. So a rough guess I'd say my honeymoon lasted from 8 months to 16 months.

I have been diagnosed late as I was painfully thin and went on insulin as soon that I was diagnosed!!! and spent 6 or more months in hospital and soon as I walked out of the ward my first real hamburger was my quest and it was the best burger that's was around at the time.
And now I am hungry.

I was diagnosed way back in 74. I was put on insulin imediatly. It was in the spring and as I recall I was on about 8 units of NPH. 1 shot a day. I was extremly active during the summer and actually went off insulin. I don't remember how this was determined because we did not have blood glucose moniters back then, just urine testing In the fall when I went back to school I went back on insulin and have been on it ever since. Coming up on 35 years soon.

OHANA..read some of the threads in 1.5 regarding the same type of question as I am fairly sure most of the type 1's were immediately put on insulin...

My honeymoon lasted for a couple months, but due to my insulin resistance I had to go on insulin immediately. Never stopped.

Diagnosed in spring, honeymoon over no Thanksgiving that year. Insulin one or two months later. It only took that long because I moved & didn't get a new endo right away. Really wanted pills to work. Very happy once I got insulin and felt so much better so quickly. I was 35 BTW.

It's been so long but I had about 2 years of where just a shot in the morning of about 18 units NPH worked well for me.

i was diagnosed in late march of 92, and was put on insulin right away, but my levels were so good that i hardly needed any... it was like 12 and 20 twice a day (humulin r - 12 / humulin n 20 - every 12 hours)...

but i was told my diabetes was caused by an infection back in 88 so i guess i was ok for 4 years...

My honeymoon phase ended before I was diagnosed, evidently. Yours definitely won't last forever - usually never more than a year. When were you diagnosed?

Red,

I was just diagnosed this December.

I tested Neg for the Gad antibodies, but my Endo is SO convinced I am type one. (not sure why... I plan to ask at my next apt. I just assumed I was type 2 like my dad) so when he told me type 1 I kinda mentally froze)

I am not overweight at all, I have been underweight most of my life until recently, good cholesterol and triglycerides etc... So I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I am not so convinced as my fastings are fine (80-105) and my 2hr OGT were just over (220 ish)... I went in because I noticed I would get SOOO tired after eating, and would get shaky on occasion, and sometimes I felt like my vision would get blurry...

So, that is my reasoning for even asking this stuff

Yes, the salient question is always "why?" when it comes to a diagnosis. It's strange your doctor did not actually give you a reason. Leaves you in the dark. Could be a good reason for the diagnosis or a not so watertight one. It's certainly doesn't seem a clear cut reason like escalating BG's or a particularly high A1c or + to GAD.

Asking is your next move. And although I might sound like a broken record around here sometimes saying this, if he doesn't convince or take you seriously, get a second opinion pronto.

I thought it was December from your sig, but noticed you joined the forum in September, so that threw me off...was your doc suggesting the dx prior to December? Maybe 'cause your Dad is T2, though. It just confused me that you joined before dx...just wondering.

And T1s are not usually overweight - especially prior to dx. The glucose in your body isn't getting to your tissues/organ, so you lose weight. Your body is "starving." It is when you start to control your BG that you being to return to a normal weight (or gain), because the glucose from your diet is getting to where it needs to go.

And your symptoms definitely sound familiar. The fasting sound good, and the 2hrs aren't great, but not bad, either. Good chance you're still on your honeymoon in my opinion.

I'm w/Subby - if you're unsure or displeased, get a 2nd opinion ASAP.

good luck!

MODY is another possibility for someone who is non-obese and shows poor 2 hour postprandials.
