on the pump the average for a day is anywhere between 21u to 27u that includes bolus and basal.

This is where I am wondering about myself--My pump basal says 20.9 units a day, but I regularly use anywhere from 50-65 units total a day. Do I eat a lot or something? I don't think I am insulin-resistant, no one has ever suggested that to me.
(By the way, I'll have a few more posts about what other people here do as far as lifestyle--I'm starting to think maybe I have been a bit flippant with my affliction).

-10units of R, 36 of N at breakfast, unless my sugar is high, then i take a few extra units.
-10units of R at dinner, unless my sugar is high, then i take a few extra units.
-32units of N at 10:30pm
so in total I have 88units on a good sugar day.

Humulog - 18 units per day roughly (6, 5, 7 usually before each meal)

This is a little , but I can almost guarantee that if you switched from NPH to Lantus, you would not be taking nearly that much insulin. When I was on shots, my NPH needs seemed to keep rising and rising and rising, and then one night it almost killed me.
Okay, back to the topic of daily insulin intake (average).

I'm on the pump, but average approximately 30 to 40 (total) units per day (including boluses). My hourly rates have decreased, so I'm pretty happy about that. Hopefully now that I've found the ideal rates for me (and my sugars), I'll be able to lose some more weight (kinda stalled on weight loss lately - too much sitting )

Lantus: 28 u. at bedtime.
Humalog: 8u.breakfast, 4-6u. lunch, 8u. Dinner but this changes depending on what I eat but not more than a unit or 2. So I guess that equals up to 48 to 50 units a day. Maybe I do need a pump. LOL

duck - NPH? i think i've been on that..thats the really quick, short acting stuff you take with each meal? well that would boost me from 3 to 4 needles a day..and i am already losing places to do my needle with 3 shots a day..so i dont think i'll go back to the 4 a day

I usually take:
12 units Humulin(Lente)
9 units Humulog(Lispro)
(soon after I awaken)
2-3 units Humulog at suppertime
8 units Humulin
(before bedtime)
So about 32 units each day.

Hi Batty:
I'm not on either N or R, but I think(anyone correct
me if I am wrong) that N is NPH(slow/long-lasting) and
R is Regular(short/fast-acting).
I don't know why but my Bro(3 yrs. my senior)was
always on NPH while my oldest Bro and I were not. He has been complaining for some time now about the NPH not working
good for him anymore(he's had the Big D for almost 46 yrs.now).
I wish Lantus was in Canada for him(and anyone else who wants it). His work would pay for a pump but he is reluctant to try it
because he has heard bad reviews of it from some people.
I agree with Duck. You are taking alot of Insulin at your age.
The NPH is probably the cause.

Also Batty, maybe a slight change in the foods you eat and your
exercise habits might help. Just a thought.

Eri gets 20u NPH and 4u humalog in the a.m.
sliding scale humalog throughout the day
13u NPH and 3u humalog(sometimes more) at night,
so a total of 40u + per day
(she's now switched again, and I consider her lucky if she wakes up w/ a lower than 210 reading in the morning.)

Hi Batty,
Like Kickstart said, N=NPH as far as I know (it's been over three years since I took any NPH, but the bottles said "N" and not "NPH"). I've been known to villify NPH, but when it tried to kill me multiple times, I decided we weren't going to be friends anymore.
NPH is volatile in that some days it works at about 50% effectiveness, so you get used to that and you begin to plan accordingly, and then one night it kicks in at 95%, and you wake up with your parents shoving anything sugary down your throat...Or your college roommates...Or your girlfriend...Or some friends on the way to an amusement park...It really started to take a toll on me toward the end. And the whole time I thought it was me. Also, I was taking more and more since it seemed to be working less and less, so I was compounding the issue.
I am noticing that the men here take a lot more insulin in general than the women...I wonder why?

Carlie - Humulin N is NPH that takes longer to kick in, while Humulin R is the quicker of the two to kick in but lasts short than N. I'm on this much, because the lower doses became too little to gain control. I've been put on that short reaction humulin, i cant remember the name now..where you take it and it kicks in 5mins after you inject(rather than 20mins with R)...but it made no difference. I was on it..for about 6months..it replaced the R doses I wrote above...but it wasn't until I switched BACK to Humulin R, that my sugars got under control.
i know it's a lot, but it doesnt really seem like that when i inject it, and no matter what i've done, its the only way to keep my sugars under control. it's taken a long time to get it like this, and my doctor sees no reason at the moment while I'm still in puberty(the reason why we had to up my doses so much -- when i was younger they were a lot less) since it will only cause my sugars to go higher again.

| | | Units I am taking 30 units of Ultralente most mornings(I tend to oversleep). and I take Lispro with every meal. So about 10 units of that daily, I'm a low carb eater |

| | Well...I had been doing the "Untethered Regimen", but have just recently gone back to relying on the pump alone...don't know exactly why, just thought I would try it again. Actually, my control was much better on the UR, but I didn't like that I was taking more insulin than I do just using the pump alone. On the UR...I generally took about 48-50 units of both Lantus and Humalog.together. Now on the pump I generally take anywhere from 30-40 units. However, if my control doesn't improve, I probably will return to the Untethered Regimen.
