| | What's up with this? Ok gang, here's my concern. Before going to bed last night, I checked my bg and it was 170 (I know it was high but I splurged and had pizza. Don't do that very often). Well I took my Lantus shot and had a small snack of pb and crackers. Woke this morning to a bg of 57. I don't know what is wrong or if I did anything wrong. I took the dose my CDE prescribed about 2 months ago. Any ideas as to what may have caused such a tremendous drop. I'm going to see my CDE next week and an endo in January. I'll make sure to mention this to both. Thanks for any help.

Cin | Wow! 170 after pizza sure isn't bad!
From my understanding, Lantus acts as a basal insulin (with no real peak). Humalog (of course) is faster acting (within 5 to 10 minutes once in the system), but takes approx. 3 to 4 hours to exit (the system).
You take 28 units of Lantus (right?), but how much Humalog did you take? Was your sugar level normal prior to dinner? Do you have a carb to insulin ratio? I was also curious as to why you had peanut butter & crackers (protein and carbs) before bed. Were you already dropping that evening? Sorry for the 50 questions (lol), but knowing all this will help us to better help you.

| | | I know what ya mean, Bel. It still would be good to know the information, as that may provide a clue as to why it happened, or at least point us in the right direction. It sounds to me like the Humalog taken (for dinner) was too great of an amount. The reason I say that is (as my CDE told me), you have to work backwards when using Humalog. Cin, if you experience morning lows like that, it could be that the dinner amount (of Humalog) taken (coupled with the 'basal' that the Lantus provides), is too much. You definitely should mention it to both your CDE and (future) endo. I'm only giving info. that I've learned from my CDE and endo. Just trying to help.

| | | I would've asked you everything Dew just did, only she beat me to it LOL!!!
What is your CHO ratio? Maybe you need to retest it? Could you have possibly taken the Humalog rather than the Lantus by mistake?
I need to understand here lol - you ate pb crackers and didn't bolus for them? Just the Lantus? Boy if that's the case, you're lucky you didn't wake up higher than a kite!!
