My new Endo

Tomorrow I see my new Endo, and I am so anxious/excited!! I was just diagnosed in January, my A1c was 11 something. In March it was 9.1. I don't expect it to be "great" this time, since I am having such a hard time controling it. I do hope that it is improved. I am so uneducated, my previous Dr was no help at all. I am currently taking 2 units of Novolog before meal (no matter what). I don't know what my carb to insulin ratio is but I'm hoping to learn LOTS MORE tomorrow. I hope I'm not as disapointed with this visit as I have been in the past.

I'm glad you realize the benefit of a good endo.

What basal (long acting) insulin are you taking right now?

Some things you might want to bring up:

1. I:C ratio (as mentioned before)
2. Recommendations for a dietician (will help you with food choices)
3. Pumping: Is it for you?, How long until you are ready?, What would they recommend?
4. Testing: Times to test, different meters and their benefits
5. Any other questions you may have (I'm sure others will add to my list too)

I hope your a1c keeps on dropping. Nothing with diabetes is really instant gratification, but getting a good a1c number can be rewarding.

I've really got one word of advice for meeting a new endo... RELAX

If they are receptive, you'll know what to ask them - just be honest (and take a short list in with you of the issues you've got in your head, if you worry you'll forget). If they are not so receptive, they'll be controlling the shots anyway. In that case hopefully all is not lost and they still give you some good guidance.

I take Lantus 4 units in the morning and 4 at night. I have to do this because it does not last 24 hours for me. That another question/concern that I have. There has to be something else that would work better especially because I have redness and swelling at the injection site

I hope that the visit with the new endo goes well. When I used Lantus I also had to take it twice a day because it ran out at about 18 hours. I didn't have any redness/itching, though. The other supposedly 24-hour long acting insulin is Levemir, so you may want to ask about that.

Levemir seems like it would be a good choice for you, it doesn't work quite as long as Lantus, but since you are splitting doses you should be fine.

Autie, I was also diagnosed in Jan 2009. Like you; I am also not satisfied with my current endo or its team. I have found that no 2 people offers the same advice or theroy. I am seeking a new one but here in NC, It takes 3-5 months just to get a new patient appointment. It has been frustrating but I will not give up. I hope your endo appointment is sucesscfully in every way.
