Exercise increasing blood sugar level??

My friend's sister is type 1 diabetic and apparently her blood sugar really rises when she exercises! And it's not because she's eating lots before exercising or anything, it's just through the exercise alone!!

She has to give herself insulin before she exercises in order to try to control it.

SURELY that's very abnormal isn't it?

Can it happen? (Not that I'm calling my friend or her sis a liar obv - it's just I've never heard of it!)

Search for the term "liver dump" here and you'll soon find links that will give you more detail than you ever wanted to know about why some of us suffer from this phenomenon...

You must check before exercising and after too. I heard a few times that if your BS levels are higher than where it should be, exercises at that point would be the cause of a later rise. It all comes back to achieving close to normal levels 24/7. Something that we all know it is possible on the planet Mars or Venus... LOL

Once in awhile that will happen to me. Usually, it's when I start off a little on the high side to begin with and then I do a very intense, strenuous workout. You would think that that kind of exercise would bring down your blood sugar, but I guess that's not always the case. Also, sometimes I will start off ok then drop low after a workout and rebound high a few hours later. Yes, exercise is usually a good thing for us diabetics, but sometimes it makes things unpredictable

Weightraining makes it even more unpredictable. I find as I got older, my exercise routing makes my diabetes even harder to control.. Post exercise, my sugar wants to skyrocket! Also, I will get higher sugars that following night if I did heavy weights...

Adrenaline can raise the blood sugar alot for some people, and plenty of adrenaline is released during a workout, I allways find that when Im doing something like a 7 foot drop on a unicycle or ollieing a bench on my skateboard or whatever crazy thing I decide to try at that given time, my blood sugar will rise alot. So it could just be her adrenaline levels.

You need some insulin in your body to utilise energy. If you haven't got enough blood sugar will go up (bit like it does before you are diagnosed and gien insulin). If you haven't got enough insulin and it's already high it can go up - had it when swimming - 12mmol when I got in - 17mmol when I got out!

Not sure how you control this as I've gone in swimming at around 11mmol and go out at 5mmol!! Depends on what you've eated (low or high Gi!) , how much you insulin with lunch!, etc etc..........lottery isn't it??!!

Keep smiling!
