Hello.

Hello folks...I am new to this board so this is my first post. Just wanted to give a little background on myself....and wanted to see if there is any other "pumpers" out there.

I am 23 and have had type one diabetes since I was 18. Of course I started out using injections but in 2000, I got an H-Tron pump from Disetronics. My A1C was 12.something when I was on shots then my first A1C with the pump was 5.8 and is now 6.5. I can say the pump has changed my life. I eat what I want but that is where the problem lies...I am gaining weight and I think I have finally stopped gaining, but now it is time to lose. Is there any good diets out there for diabetics? Anyways, I am glad I found this forum, hopefully I can help and I can get help.

Later

Mac - Welcome!

Yes, you'll find other pumpers here. And plenty of opinions on diets, too! Just reading some of the recent posts will give you a good idea.

It took me a few days of being on here to realize I could click into the "profile" box at the end of anyone's message to find out a bit about the people here. It makes things a lot more personal, as if you've actually met them.

Good luck. Beth.

Yes, I am familiar with how this forums work....I am a member of three others. Looks like there is quite a few members here and it would take a little while to look at every profile. But thanx for the heads up.

Welcome MacnReef!

How about a calorie diet. I don't know the numbers but I'm sure can you find a chart on the web.

To mantain a heathly wieght you are limited to so many calories per day. You do that, you will see results. I knew someone that did that. Lost 10 pounds in one or two weeks.

Mac,

I had the same problem as you, I was dxd in 2000 and on shots i was fine with the weight....i was watching ever thing i was eating....i never ever cheated....then a year later in 2001 i went on the pump....and after i realized that i could eat anything i did lol....so anyway thats when the weight gaining started every three months i had to buy new clothes because i kept gaining...Im pretty much leveled off now not gaining anymore thank god i would just die....but the good thing is i dont look scrawny and sickly anymore....the bad thing is i wish i was just a little bit smaller...hahahah

what im doing now is eating low carb foods....im limiting myself to about 15-30 carbs at each meal...and im exercising also....just to tell you that the more insulin you pump the more that you gain...so the less you are on the easier it is to lose weight....because insulin stores fat....and you dont want that!!!

right now im ranging about 27-35 units of humalog a day...sometimes a little less....or a little more....before i was almost on 50 units of humalog when i was snacking like crazy....i went to **** with myself but im back on track and you will be too....

my best advice to you is not to look for any specific diabetic diet to eat right....cut the carb intake and you will lose....and make sure that you exercise because that is like having a second medication....i went from having a basal of .9 to .7 in three weeks...it was awesome my doctor is so excited i cant wait to see what my A1c is going to be...my last was 9 the highest i have been since diagnosis and it made me crazy....because i was ranging in the 6.4-6.5 range......oh and by the way if you eat a little m ore fiber in your diet that helps lower your blood sugars also and helps you lose weight too!! you only need like 30 grams to start yourself off because we all know what alot of fiber does hahaha ok hope this helped

Gina,
That is what I have started now, lowering the carb intake...thanx for the info. I totally agree, I am not like fat but I don't look scrawny...I look healthy, but like you just with I could lose a little weight like 10-15lbs.

BTW, your mailbox is full....I can't PM you!

lelvins, I've been on the pump two weeks and It doesn't bother me at all. I have the pouch to use when I sleep and the clip it comes with works well for work. I do have the problem of checking my sugar every two hours. I need to know so I check. My doctor had to change my prescription twice since starting the pump. When you shower you take it off. It has been a change for me but not an uncomfortable one.

I do the same as vic, but my clip case I wear during the day broke when I was in TN. So now I just put it in my pocket.
