Never getting a good nights sleep

Hi
Even if my BS aern't running high I still seem to be getting up at least twice in the night to go to the toilet. Does this happen to anyone else?.
Ever since I've been diabetic I've always had problems in the night, either worrying about my blood sugars going low (more when I was a kid) or urinating frequently. Sometimes I have to sleep in seperate rooms from my partner so I don't mess up his sleep routine.

Is peeing during the night even with normal bs's just a "diabetic" thing?
Any suggestions?

Ahh to get a good night's sleep! Is there anything this disease doesn't affect!

Doesn't sound like it's anything to do with diabetes. Frequent urination is more to do with the body trying to remove sugar from the blood when the bg gets too high.

Frequent urination may be a sign of another problem though, so it might be good to get it checked out. Or maybe you've simply got too much fluid in your diet.

Before diabetes nightly trips were rare. Now twice a night are common. Yes it's partly due to an increase in fluids and maybe some to getting rid of excess bg.

klpants,

You have my full sympathy. Like you, I get very little sleep. And in the morning I feel like death warmed up. This has been going on for years.

Getting up in the middle of the night to go to the loo really messed up my sleep cycle. After I switched to Lantus, the need for it went away. But I still found that I woke up in the middle of the night. I felt the need to relieve myself, even though my bladder was nealy empty.

At one stage I was sure that it had to be a prostrate problem. But it turned out not to be the case. And the symptoms eventually disappeared. But I now find that I just don't get to sleep at all!

I have kept away from sleeping tablets because they are so addictive. The GP has put me on a anti-depressant which is supposed to also help me sleep. But it is not much help. So I am open to suggestions ...

Cheers,

Mark

Yes, it's a pain, especially as getting up in the night also has an affect on my partners sleeping so we are both a bit grouchy the next day!!. Same thing hapened to me as well with the Lantus, I find I get better control and not so many lows but still peeing in the night.

Only one suggestion, I guess maybe try drink less after 7pm or so but even then I still wake up to go a bit.......

I know what you mean about sleeping tabs not really what I want to do neither, I'd probably still get up!!!

I'm going to post something that can be taken as humorous or maybe even disrespectful, but hear me out (what we do in our own homes is our business...): I know a guy who takes looooong road trips fairly frequently (8-10 hour trips) and he never stops to go to the bathroom. I finally got it out of him that he puts on a Depends diaper (an adult diaper) so he can go as needed.

At first, I laffed, but he pointed out it was a very effective tool.

So, if you are not inhibited and need the sleep, maybe something to consider...

When I get up at night to relieve myself, and struggle to fall asleep, especially in the "wee" ('scuse the pun) hours of the morning, I know it can only mean one thing - my sugars are high.

my only other issue while sleeping, is my tendency to sweat while i'm sleeping. Now I know this might be from a hypo, but sheesh, I can't be going hypo every night, can I?

anyhoo good luck kplants, i hope you get it sorted out.

p.s have you checked your sugars at night when you're getting up?

Oh, Duck, you do have a good sense of humour! I'll consider it as a last resort!, I think my partner would find it very amusing!

Yep, usually test when I get up and most times blood sugar is normal. As for the sweating, I've got mild neuropothy and have found that my body can't thermoregulate, not just the affected area ie my hands but neuropothy tends to affect the whole body to an extent, and I do also sweat in the night, even when I'm not having a low. Do you have any problems with your circulation?? could be why you sweat as well??

I was going to suggest it might just be a case that you're getting old, but I've just looked at your website and realised I was rather off-base....

I rarely wake up at night to go to the loo. But i have sleeping problems. Tried reading boring books, late evening walks, valerina pills (natural relaxing/sleeping pill)... you name it, nothing worked for me. So now i have found my own way going to sleep. Got the idea while reading Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix for the first time- Occlumency! There's no better way to relax and fall asleep. Simply close your mind from all thoughts and feelings. Takes a while to master it, but once you've done that, you'll hopefully be able to have a good night sleep. I've noticed i dream less on nights when i have fallen asleep with the help of occlumency, and wake up relaxed and not as tired in the morning, and best of all, i don't wake up as often in the middle of night.

Hmm all this talk about sleep reminds me... It's time for this swede to head to bed, working tomorrow...

With me I just cant sleep and it doesnt involve having to go to the loo. Its just the fact i cant stay asleep and i am even tired as heck and still cant sleep atleast 8 hours. I go to bed bout 11 or and wake up every hour, and end up finally geting up about 6 or 7 am. My body just wont let me sleep. I think I am gonna have to ask bout sleeping pills! Cuz when school starts its not gonna be pretty at all and thats less then a month away!

Talking

Waking up in the middle ofthe night does disrupt your sleep and I think it really does affect you during the day . There has been studies in the past which showed how sleep affects not only being awake and alert during the day, but also appitite and mood, among other things.

I find I wake up at least once during the night...usually to visit the bathroom , but also I find that I usually wake up from being low. As for highs during the night, I'll wake up to go to the loo (as you English would say), but sometimes highs just wears me out that I won't wake up. However, I find that if I am still too high in the morning...I feel like I was run over by a train or something of that nature .

Anyway... here are some things that might help those who can't fall asleep: a warm shower or bath , reading, having some hot cocoa or hot milk . For me, reading and relaxing usually does the trick

Hope everyone has pleasant dreams
