Hello everyone....
I live in SoJo so I go to the beach alot. I put my insulin in a little insulated case thingy and I throw an ice pack in it. What does everyone else do with their insulin when they go to the beach or someplace like it?

| | | I keep my pump strapped to my side but make sure it's not in direct sunlight or in a place where it can receive direct heat gain. When I was on injections I used to keep my whole little insulin case, with the syringes, swabs, insulin, et al, in the cooler with the drinks.

I have never seen someone doing it..I wonder what kind of reactions should I expect?

You've probably never seen anyone injecting on the beach as I think most diabetics inject quite discreetly, I used to get the flashing lights out and siren but found I caused too much of a disturbance (kidding!) 
If you're wondering how to wash hands for blood testing just take a few wet wipes and just do everything as you normally do.
If you get any reaction just ignore it. Nothing to do with anyone else. |

Anyway, it is good to know that there are so selfconfident people with diabetes outthere..where I live it "our" usual actions are not usual to "them" - normal and healthy people.

| | When going to the beach for the day, I prefer to keep insulin in a ziplock bag set inside a cooler along with the drinks. I do the same with my meter, supplies, and Epipen, but they're in an insulated carrier (and also in a ziplock bag) so they don't get too cold. I try to sit pretty close to a life-guard post/station, and have never received any hassle about injecting in public. Most of the people there are pretty wrapped up in what they're doing (sun-bathing, swimming) and never even notice. Those who do, don't usually have a negative reaction, but are just curious.
Since I'm usually slimed up with oil and/or lotion, I use an alcohol wipe for my fingers to test. The same goes for the injection spot.
The days that I go to the beach for only a couple of hours, and my bgl has been stable for a few days, I don't carry my insulin with me. Just the meter and Epipen. (We only live 5 min. away if there's a problem.) I know...  (preparing to get clobbered for this behavior). I sit even closer to the life-gaurd station on those days "just in case," even though my bf is always with me. My most common prob when at the beach is going low.

I KNOW this sounds horrid, but we finally realized that if she had a big 'n tasty from Mc D's BEFORE the beach, she was usually pretty much in GOOD range(lower, but good)... |
