| | | forgot to take lantus..what should I do? I was at a party the other night, and I honestly forgot to take my Lantus. I wasent quite sure what to do the next morning, so I just decided to check my sugars at random parts of the day, and just use my correction dosage. But I also realized that I am still in the honeymoon period, so its not like I had NO insulin in me whatso ever.
If you guys have any suggestions or better steps to take for me to take if I ever forget to take it again, pleaseeeee tell me. Thanks

| | | If it were me, I would just monitor and cover all day until my normal shot time. I'd probably also be taking it twice a day, as from what I read it seems to work better that way, and would also cut down on the severity of a missed shot.

| | | It has been awhile since I used lantus, but I probably would have gone with a split dose and then checked all day long and corrected.

| | | I've done this before when I was taking my Lantus before bed. Woke up about 3AM and remembered that I had not taken my shot before bed. Checked my bg to be sure and sure enough, middle 300's !!!
Called one of our local ER's and to tell you the truth, they were NOT much help. When I explained my situation, their response was "Well, we don't think it would hurt you to take it now but we really aren't advising you one way or the other." I was like WTF?? Aren't they supposed to be there to help you??
I finally was able to get in touch with my CDE through the hospital and he told me to go ahead and take it but to monitor the next 24 hrs very closely.
My suggestion would be to discuss this with your endo. It's best to know what to do before a situation arises.

| | | My plan for when this happens to me--------I'm pretty sure it'll happen, sometime, is to check B/G like crazy, every hour or so, and use my bolus correction ratio>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
1 unit of novolog/novorapid to bring B/G down 50/2.8 points in one hour

| | | i'm pretty sure this happened to me recently, i was out of town, and staying at a hotel,so i thought i took it and was'nt sure, and when i got back the maid had been at the room and cleaned up so i was'nt sure if the needle can i used was gone so i did'nt know for sure but i was severly high in the low 300's which is never me, i'm always low. and i felt pure terrible. so i took the humalog to get myself down to normal.i'll never let that happen again. hey we are only human and we make mistakes and we screw up on occasion. |

| | | I've fallen asleep without my bedtime Lantus. While I've only used Lantus for 2 months now, I prefer to cover with extra Humalog the next day (testing every 3-4 hours) till the next Lantus dose is due. |

| | | Yes, easily done!
Did it 2 weeks ago! I realised in the morning and waited till the evening came round again and just monitored carefully. My diabetic nurse said at least I had novarapid with me and could inject with meals during the day and just have an extra unit. Or you could have taken half in the morning when you remembered and half that night and full dose the next evening as normal (hope this makes sense). |

| | | I find it depends on how long you've missed your dose by, if it's just a few hours (like I usually take mine at 11pm, but have occasionally come home at 3am and taken it then) then just take it when you remember.
If it's longer than that, say if I was to wake up at 7am and realize i hadn't taken it I would suggest monitoring and correcting with humalog until your regular lantus time (I'd even suggest taking it a few hours early... a couple of hours won't mess anything up for the next day)
I have done what Sparkle suggested and taken half of it in the morning and then half at night and then back to regular dose on night two. All that did was make my blood sugar only half funky for two days instead of fully funky for one. I'd prefer just to be checking like crazy and bolusing for one day, so I'd advise against splitting the dose.
We all forget sometimes, just don't make a habit of it! Speaking of, it's 11:30 and I've not taken my Lantus yet... I'll do that now.

| | | I woke up a couple of months ago with an incredibly high blood sugar and ketones and it took me a little while to realise that I had forgotten my levemir shot in the evening. I did a little bit of levemir in the morning and just kept on checking my blood sugar every 1 to 2 hours, I had a tough time getting the ketones down but once they went my blood sugar was okay, a little bit higher than usual but not too bad towards the end of the day.
