Do I HAVE to take Lantus at night?

I take my lantus at night, but I would find it sooo much easier, if I could take it sometime in the morning, im not going to do anything untill I talk to my doctor, but Is it possible to do the time switch?

Yes, you just need to account for the difference in the overnight hours you will *miss* that will not be covered by the night time lantus shot...

I don't think it makes a huge difference. When I was on Lantus and traveled to Europe, I didn't change the time I took my insulin even though it went from pm to am. I didn't notice a whole lot of difference. It would be interesting to know why they pick evening for Lantus.

I take mine in the morning. I really don't think it makes any difference. I do bolus before bed to cover a snack. Maybe that is why I have not problems in the morning.

I was injecting my Lantus before bed every night but then I started having lows around 2-3 AM. My doctor had me switch to mornings and no more 3AM lows !! I don't really see any differences.

When I was on Lantus, I always took it in the am...maybe to prevent lows that are common in the wee hours in the morning. Then I needed to divide the dose up, b/c it wasn't lasting me the complete 24 hours

, so I took the majoriy in the morning and the rest in the evening and that did help tremendously. I don't think it would be a problem for you to switch taking it from pm to am, but I would definitely suggest you talk to your doctor before making such changes

. It's alway a good idea to discuss these type of things and see what your MD thinks.

I recently switched to am with my lantus. I usually took 32 units at night and one evening i took 16 pm and then 16 am and then none that night and then the whole amount 32 units the next morning. The reason why most doctors prescribe lantus at night is because of people mixing up lantus and there fast acting insulin. This way you never mix anything b/c lantus is at night all by its self. It would really suck to take 32 units humulog... looks like a hypo to me

i take my lantus in the morning since my quack endo just gave me a bottle of it and sent me on my way,so since i took humalin u in the am i just started taking it in the am. i love this insulin i have maybe a hypo once a month before this i had about 4 a week that were pretty severe.

I take mine around midnight. I'm one of those 'dawn phenomenon' people. When I took it earlier at night, I would hit the hypos in the early a.m., but now all seems to be working fine.

I too love this insulin, the bedtime & morning NPH never seemed to cover my peaks at the right time, or I wasn't timing it right, but I'd usually have morning BGL in the 300-400 range, normal at lunchtime (sliding scale Humalog), but back into the 200's by dinner.

Since the switch to Lantus, I rarely get close to a 200 reading at any time of day. The key for me has been testing constantly to figure out when I need the peak and adjust the timing of the shot, but after that, its been smooth sailing throughout the day.
