what to do when sugar is high and it's meal time?

i pump insulin but have been sick the last few days with a cold and my blood sugars just won't seem to come down from the 200 range. i feel so uncomfortable eating when it gets like that because it ends up going higher (and mind you i do not eat carboy things, just protein and the small amounts of carbs in green vegetables). i need to fuel because i tend to under eat anyway but i feel so guilty eating when my sugar is high, and feel icky because i just get sicker immediately afterward and it makes it hard to know how much insulin to put in for my meal since i already have so much in my body already.

Why don't you call your GP. I checked the American Diabetes website and there is a large section on what to do when you are sick.

I often will increase my basal rates when sick if my BG is trending upwards.

When sick, hydration also can become an issue, so make sure to keep pumping the fluids...

Agree with increasing basal and fluids. I will also concentrate on more protein kind of meals and eat eggs, low fat cheese, nuts.

the thing is that even pure protein has an effect on my blood sugar. a slight one, but thirty points when you're already high and feeling the effects is stressful. fats seem to work a little better but don't do much to blunt my hunger. /

A temporary basal increase will probably help. You're probably pretty insulin resistant too, so you may have to increase your bolus doses too.

Make sure you drink lots of liquids. Do you feel up to making some homemade chicken soup? That lways makes me feel better! How about some celery with peanut or almond butter? Crunchy and yummy. Or some hot "cereal" made with vanilla protein powder, almond meal, ground flax seeds and a tiny bit of oat bran? Cook that up with water and eat it with almond milk and a little butter and cinnamon.

      Feel better soon, Zelack.

sounds to me you need help on learning how to Figure out:

      Bolusing per using Carb Counting
      CBing- Correction Bolusing

If you haven't got and Read it several Times? THINK LIKE A PANCREASE and USING INSULIN books ASAP

When, Not if I am above my 90's for eating?
1- I take a CB for how much I am above that level
2- If I don't know the Total Carbs? I don't eat it.. Thus Know the Tot carbs and Know your I:CR ( Insulin To Carb Ratio )
      3. When I get sick? I have a List of Foods and Liquids To Have ahead of time.. and stick to them
      4. and Yes, I normally Have to increase my Bolus and my Basal by 10-20%
      5. and Test Every Hour after Eating and then every 2 hrs otherwise..

I use MDI, Insulin Pens, ave 6% A1c's for yrs as a result..
