| | | When did this happen? The last I knew, if you were insulin dependant with a CDL, you could not drive interstate. I got this information 6/05. It would be nice if they lifted it.

| | Diabetes and your CDL I was told it will take up to 6 months to get the waiver if you are on
Insulin. If you call this number they will send you you the paper work
need to get it started. I call and was told it wood be mailed out. So now
wait and see what is going to happen. 202-366-2990
The med card in Ohio is a joke. I know 5 or 6 drivers on Insulin in the last
2 years still driving. |

| | | What are your opinions on this- like I said I have a class 1 CDL, but I have never notified the DMV that I am type 1 insulin dependant, so I have no restrictions. I just never told them when I renewed because I didn't want the hassle. Anyone else?

| | | It's okay for you to be insulin dependant, as long as you're not driving over state lines. I drive in state and have no problems. My Dr has to fill out form stating that I'm not having lows. Check with your state DMV.

I would not tell them I was type 1 insulin dependant untill they ask you.

They're really saying "I love you"

| | | Does anyone know about driving permits?
I just turned 15 and was going to take my permit test soon.. but after hearing this I'm almost getting freaked out. It's not my actual license yet, I still have to have a parent in the car with me.
I'm wondering if I should tell the DMV about me having insulin-dependent diabetes, or if there are any restrictions at this level even.

| | | Some States do require it and put it on the DL. Check your states DMV site. There should be something on there if it's required. |

| | | This has been a debated issue before and pretty much the theory is if they don't ask, don't tell. Don't volunteer to the BMV that you are diabetic because in some states you need more paperwork and forms from your doctor's office. However, if they ask if you have any medical conditions, then you are pretty much obligated to tell them because if they later find out somehow you didn't tell them, they could suspend your license.

| | | I have a class 1 cdl,... but umm I never mentioned it with the dont ask, dont tell part,.. the only problem I ever had was when I went to get a haz - mat permit for the load I was driveing, they did a urine test that came back with high sugars.... and I was told that type 1's at that time in NY could not have a haz - mat permit, but went again the next week, with my blood sugar normal, they found no sugar spilling into my urine, so I just got a one..... but as it stands, right now i just keep re-newing in PA and just wont tell them about my type 1......

| | | Wow I am about to become very unpopular :/
My personal opinion is that we SHOULD inform anyone necessary that we are Diabetic, whether it means extra paperwork or restriction.
I believe we have a responsibility to society at large to do so.
I seriously don't want anyone who has siezures, hypos, etc. hiding it from proper authorities (which would restrict them,) - then losing control and killing my kids.
I am Type 1, and I think to be open and honest is the responsible thing to do.

- Aftiel | I'm not sure how each state does it, but I know in Ohio it's useless to report it. All it does is add a restriction on renewing the license. But as for an officer running your license on the road, they would have no idea why you have a medical restriction. If it specifically said why you had a medical restriction then I would think it would be more important to tell. Also though, this may apply to only Ohio. I'm not sure how other states handle driver's licenses.
