Question The day after effect, whats the best cure?

Ok, we probably all know the way one feels after having a hypo during the night, the morning after we wake up feeling awful even if we treat it and inevitably get the bounce-back effect.

The only way to feel better is to make sure that the next night I don't go too low, and have the same rebound effect. If I get a good nite's sleep the next night then I will feel ok. problem is getting to sleep. say that on night 1 I go low, then day 2 I feel terrible and my BG's tend to yo-yo. then to get sleep on nite 2 is almost impossible, I just dont feel sleepy at all. day 2 is terrible in terms of the "aftershock" as I like to call it, bad taste in my mouth, my whole body's muscles feel stiff, I feel extremely irritable and generally cannot concentrate, not to mention the headaches.

So, anyone got a cure to feel better after going low?

You not scared of taking sleeping tablets and having a hypo whilst under the effects?

I will usually only take a sleeping pill if I have taken my last bolus 4 or 5 hours before going to bed and my bg is stable. Since I am a pumper now, I have greater peace of mind with regards to sleeping since I have set a much lower basal rate at night.

What I've noticed with Ambien is that it works great, but you have a fairly small window. It does not "knock you out", but helps you fall asleep if you try. I find if I do not try to fall asleep within an hour of taking the pill, that it has loss it's effect and is pretty useless, YMMV. That may be why they have come out with Ambien CR (continual release).

Going low at night is no fun and I completely understand your frustration. I have been there way too many times myself. Moving to the pump was the best decision of my life with regards to my diabetes. Before the pump I would have terrible lows at night and I had to move my Lantus injections to from bedtime to morning and it did help.
