One thing that I would like an answer to is how do they determine your type of diabetes, is there a test they can run that show insulin production, is it from your BG readings, do they take a flying guess!!

I was just told I was type 2 on the back of a spot reading then sent for a full blood check with an A1C countback test included, then shoved on metformin. It may have been me getting a little overlaoded at the time but was sure I asked if there was a test they could run to confirm the type and told no. Now my doc is making noises about maybe I was mis-diagnosed which left me a little confused till I read about type 1.5 on here.

I am going back to see him soon and would like to know if there are any tests that could be run to confirm insulin production and the levels they are at.

Any information or insights would be gratefully received.

I think there's a test called a c-peptide test which analyses the antibodies in your system. From that they can work out whether your insulin problems are caused by islet cells being destroyed (T1/T1.5) or whether it's a case of impaired production and/or insulin resistance (T2).

I think the C-peptide shows how much insulin is being created by the pancreas, while the GAD anti-body looks for presence of the anti-bodies that destroy the beta cells on your pancreas. The GAD anti-body test is used to verify type 1 vs. type 2.

Ask your doctor to do a C-Peptide test. This test determines how much insulin, if any, your pancreas is producing.

You can actually be type 1, but be in your honeymoon period and have the c-peptide test come back showing that you are producing a good amoung of insulin still. This can be mis-interpreted by someone as the patient being type 2. This is what happened to my step father, and me.

BIG Thanks all, C-Peptide it is then, I am going to closley monitor my readings 3 times daily over the next few weeks to provide some data to work with on the type 1.5 theory.

hey mister Q, I think i had an Arterial Blood test and from that they knew i was T1, who knows though the medical field is a mystery unto itself!!!
