Please help - 5 Wks Pregnant & Pre-Diabetic

My blood sugar usually averages about 105-110 (fasting) in the morning and then will drop to the mid-80's to low-90's for the rest of the day. About 30 minutes after food it may jump to 120 but usually no higher and then immediately goes back down to below 100. I am five weeks pregnant - does anyone know if these levels are a cause for birth defects? Does anyone else see this happening to them? Thanks for your help!

Note - the fasting blood sugar has been above 110 on about 4 occassions in the last 3 weeks (1 x @ 126, the remaining times below 115).

This sounds like a question for your doc, health. On the surface, I'd say these are safe levels, but only your doctor can be sure. Please check with your OB/GYN. If you haven't gone for your first appointment, make sure you take your logbook with you so your doc can see what your levels have been. This will be very helpful.

Typically blood sugars rise the first 8 weeks of pregnancy. OBs nowadays want you below 95 fasting and below 120 2 hours post-meal. They may end up putting you on glyburide or something similar for the duration of the pregnancy.
