Planning to get pregnant

Hi,

My name is Joy. I am planning to get pregnant soon. I had gestational diabetes 10 months ago during my pregnancy. But my sugar is not totally normalized yet. It's not diabetes, but my sugar is pretty okay after meals. But fasting blood sugar is between 95-105. Does anyone know I need to do anything about it different to try to get pregnant? I talked to my doctor said I am fine. Please advice!

Joy

you might want to start taking 5mg folic acid on top of your prenatals...and make an appointment with your diabetes specialist.

I had GD. My sugars normalized for years. I was diagnosed with full blown T2 last month. I am answering both of your posts at once.

I will be honest. The fact that your numbers are not lowering is a sign you are heading towards type 2 (or already type 1.5 and not know it). Another pregnancy very well might mean T2.

The best thing to do is make sure to lose any pregnancy fat, stick to your GD regime (see your doctor for your D, vitamins, carb counting, and testing), and exercise.

I am not aware of any restrictions due to diabetes unless you have PCOS or endometrial issues.

My hubby and I hope to get pregnant this winter. I had GD with my first baby in the last trimester and controlled my sugars with insulin, excercise, and diet. I had a smooth delivery and a healthy baby girl : ) Post-pregnancy, I developed T2. Initially, I kept my sugars under control by breastfeeding my daughter for 9 months. Recently, I stopped BFing and my family physician put me on Metformin (500 mg 2X).

I've expressed/discussed my desire to get pregnant with my family physician, but he strongly urged me to wait until I have 3 healthy A1C test levels in a row. So far, my last two were 6.2 and 6.5 without medication. My next test is in 1.5 months. To prepare, I've been excercising every day, watching my diet, taking my meds daily, and taking prenatals too. I'm at my pre-pregnancy weight, but would like to lose more before trying.

In August, I'm going to see my ob/gyn to get her opinion as well. She closely monitored my first pregnancy which I believe led to a smooth delivery and healthy baby.

I sometimes get discouraged with having T2, but I'm beginning to see it as a blessing too. I have a GREATER respect for my body and health. I'm passing that respect onto my family as well : )

Hope to hear good news from you soon!

Have you tested anything besides your fasing BG? I only ask because it might be more indicative of how you're doing overall. Did your doctor to an A1C test before he said you were 'fine' to try?
The reason I ask is that BG control in the first six weeks (and you don't even know your preg until week 4) is the most important (though as you know tight control is important the entire time).
Also having an A1C below 6.0 puts you basically at the same risks for birth defects as a non diabetic. 6.0 and over you have increased risks.
I would insist on a test for A1C. If it comes back okay, good luck!
