Byetta & Donuts

I have been on the Byetta for 3 weeks now and aside from a touch of nausea now and then in addition to mild belly aches, my numbers have been excellent, and I lost 10 pounds. So today I really put it to the test.

The people in my office had a reception, and there were Duncan donuts and muffins galore! I thought I was in heaven. My thoughts were, “Should I put the Byetta (and the pancreas) to the test? It’s worth a try.” So, I grabbed a donut, and it was gone in less than 30 seconds…too fast for me to enjoy it. I took another one, and that tasted even better. I couldn’t stop. After 3 donuts and a half of a muffin, I was satisfied. I was expecting to feel sleepy and lethargic, which is what usually happens when my numbers go up. None of that happened. Two hours later my reading was ‘103’. I couldn’t believe it.

Needless to say, pretending that I'm in heaven is not something I should do often, or I may end up there sooner than expected. However, at least I know that, on special occasions, I can indulge a little. Anyway, it’s back to the old diet, shedding the pounds, and shooting Byetta. It was fun while it lasted.

Sometimes we do have to indulge. Several years after dx and abstaining form donuts for that whole time someone brought some Krispey Kremes to work. Okay been hearing how great they are and I was overdue for a snack and decide what the heck. Had one and decided what I already knew. People are crazy when it comes to food. The donut tasted like most any other glazed donut. Well it did spike me higher than I desired, but the rest of the day was okay. However 3 days later I had one of those days where my bg's decide to be higher. What surprised me was that it was not the 20 or 30 points higher I see sometimes, but it was like 50 or 60 points higher. Have not had a donut since.

It is funny what makes glucose levels run high, though. Last Saturday night I had dinner at a relative's house. I'm not a big dessert eater, but I did take a small bit of brownie and more than a sliver of cherry cheesecake (it was maybe the third time I've had a dessert since my diagnosis in December 2005). Expecting the worst, I checked two hours after eating and my glucose level was . . . 78 mg/dl. In retrospect, I think my numbers had something to do with the fact that my pre-dinner workout was especially vigorous and prolonged.

But thinking that I had somehow suddenly turned into super pancreas man, the following day I had a pasta dish at California Pizza Kitchen. Two hours later, my glucose level was 170 mg/dl, the highest reading I've had in a long while. Lesson learned.

Somewhat off topic, but it seems to me that there is nothing -- and I mean nothing -- at California Pizza Kitchen that I can eat without going over target (and I'm not talking about their pizzas, because I haven't had one since diagnosis). Even their darn salads send me through the roof. I think the place might be evil.
