Newbie Question

Hi All

I am curious - I was diagnosed type 2 diabetes about 3 months ago and if I check my blood sugar first thing in the morning before I eat or drink it is 7.5 to 8.5.

2 hours after eating and before I go to bed my sugar is 5.8 to 6.8. These counts seem to be the norm for me throughout the day, the only time my blood sugar is high is first thing in the morning.

I am on no medication. Is this okay?

Thanks

Schlep...

It sounds like what you are describing is the "Dawn Effect"

The 'dawn effect' (high blood sugar in the morning) - MayoClinic.com

Its fairly normal and is thought to be caused by your liver releasing additional glucose (one theory).
You should keep track of your readings and discuss them with your Dr. and see what he says.

Whatever the reason, fasting numbers of 7.5 to 8.5 are higher than they should be. Talk with your doctor on how to get these numbers down. The 5.8 to 6.8 numbers throughout the day are great. You must be on a well disciplined diet and exercise program to do this without meds. Good job!

I'm the same as you. Fasting sugars are higher than my target (above 7 mmol/L) 3 out of 5 mornings. Frustrating! The rest of the day my levels are just great. I have a bad case of DP.

I'm seeing the doc again in 2 weeks, perhaps medication will be increased at night. Don't know yet! I've tried everything, from not eating supper (very bad idea, made it much worse!! 11.5 mmol/L in the morning) to eating veggies and a lean meat, no carbs at all. Nothing seems to work. My body has a mind of its own.

Talk to your doc!

The very best to you.

Just a suggestion - try a low carb snack at night before you go to bed
