Arggh! What's your early morning wakeup bg numbers?

It looks like the honeymoon is over with Januvia for me. I'm eating low carbs, working out, and yet my numbers at wake up
are high! I'm 167 at wakeup. When I first started to add Januvia with the Metforming I was 119 at wakeup. That lasted for about three weeks. Now.. **** I'm just about as high in the morning
as before I took Januvia. Bummer. Well I've got an appointment with the endo July10th. Hopefully Bayetta will help. If not I'm going to have to get used to administering insulin and avoiding lows. What's your early morning numbers? Am I over reacting?

I AM on insulin, and my morning numbers usually range between 95 and 110. My overall average right now is around 104 or so. I don't very often go low either. Tho I was having some issues with early afternoon lows, but I've switched off the 70/30 mix and R (R when needed) and went to NPH am and pm and R with meals. Only been with this for 3 days now though, and so far doing well. Did have a low later in the afternoon today tho Maybe I took too much R with my lunch? or it was just one of those freak things where the planets all aligned just right! *shrugs* LOL

I hear a lot of good things about Byetta, except for the nausea it sometimes causes for some people.

Do as you said, tell your doc you're doing all you can, but are seeing a rise in the numbers.

By the way, insulin ain't a bad thing at all! I LOVE it infact! My numbers are GREAT, my A1c is down from 6.9 to 6.0 and I'm not stressed about my numbers anymore either! Better ALL the way around!

Morning #'s for me (on Byetta) are around 90-110. But...I also take 2000mg of Glucophage XR at bed time, so I know that is part of the equation. Byetta has been good and I will probably bump up from 5mcg-10 next month, but I am noticing "holes" in the day where I am higher, like mid-afternoon and right before bedtime. Maybe the increased dose will help with that. If not...insulin is next I guess. Whatever it takes ;-)

My early morning #'s are usually in the 112-118 range, 113 this morning. My goal is under 110, but I don't see this except for the weekends, when I test after 8 a.m. During the week when I test at 6 a.m., it's as above. I would definitely be concerned with a 160.

Have you tried a high protein snack at bedtime? Some have found this helps with lower fasting #'s. Have a piece of cheese or a few walnuts or a tsp of peanut butter just before bedtime and see.

MY FBG in the morning is from 118-130. I'm not on any meds at present, but attempting to control things with diet and excercise. I've had some bad days mixed in with a high of 140 in the last six weeks.

I normally test daily at about 6:30am. I do note i'm a bit higher on the week days, I think due to waking up with work stress on my mind.

Multiply whatever the mmol number is by 18. So if it reads 5.5 ..... 5.5 x 18 = 99 ... and do the reverse for mg/dl numbers, divide by 18.

yeah.. that's what I'm thinking. I'm doing all I can and the glucose readings are still rising. From what I read Lantus can
be injected once at night and lasts for 24hrs. It's long acting.
Thanks for the reply

I tried cashews at night, almonds.. stuff like that. Early morning
readings still stink. Dr. mentioned I shouldn't work out at night
before I go to bed, so I moved that time to after supper. Still.. no good. That's why I think it's time for Lantus at night or a fast acting insulin with meals.

Just so ya know Jerry, Lantus doesn't work 24 hours for ALL people. Actually, Lantus works for UP TO 24 hours.

A lot of people actually take TWO shots a day of Lantus (am and pm). They "split" the daily dose into two dosages, and not always equal amounts. Some require more in the am and some the pm. But each person differs on that. Just like everything else with Diabetes! But most DO start out on one shot a day.

Being that your numbers are on the rise, I would ask your doc about Lantus! I also think that a fast acting is an EXCELLENT idea! I just don't see the reason for a person with T2 to have to sit around and "wait it out" with a high reading, and all the stress it brings, when there is fast acting insulins out there that we can take, that will reverse that in a short amount of time!! That is just beyond rediculous!

I've heard that a lot of docs don't prescibe insulin because a lot of T2's don't want to give themselves "shots" ... I say, do they wanna keep their eyesite, their toes, their feet, their legs???? Do they wanna have a heart attack or a stroke?? What are they REALLY willing to do to help prevent these things????

There is NO reason us T2's should have to suffer high readings and just "sit around and wait", when there is a perfectly good and PROVEN way to prevent it!!! Just because some people are stupid, doesn't mean ALL of us are!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to go off like that, it wasn't meant to offend anyone ... it just pisses me off! As I see it, anyone who is unwilling to do something so simple as to give themselves a shot (that hurts WAY less, IF it hurts at ALL, than checking thier blood glucose level) to help prevent some very catastrophic complications, is just stupid! Sorry, no other way to put it!

I HATED needles, ALWAYS have! I didn't FEAR them, just HATED them, because they've always meant PAIN and severe brusing to me! I've never have had a good experience with them in my life! (STILL don't when SOMEONE ELSE, is dong the poking!!!) But I was SO willing to do WHATEVER it took!! If it meant giving myself shots everyday, I was willing to do it, it was worth it to me.

Then when the time came that the meds weren't working anymore, and I was told that I'd HAVE to give myself shots every day (multiple times a day), I was more than willing to do so. I don't regret it ONE bit!! In fact, I LOVE my insulin!! The STRESS is all gone now! It's rare that I have a high number, but IF I do, I know that all I have to do is take some insulin and it'll come down real soon, and that means, less chance for complications!

Mine have been running low lately, generally in the mid-50's. Guess I need to lower the Lantus a bit.

Thanks for your reply everybody. I went to the Dr.'s and I'm injecting Bayetta now twice/day. Ladytax is right, it really does not hurt. The needles are extremely fine, it does not hurt at all.
My results are not perfect yet. I've been 107-140 mostly. My wakeup has been between 140-150, better but not perfect.
I've got another visit comming up in November. If I'm not there I will talk about other options.

You guy have been a major motivator that got me over my fear of needles for one. Thanks everybody!

YaY Jerry! Good to hear that your numbers are coming down! If after a couple/few weeks you see that your numbers are still running a bit on the high side, give your doc a call to let him/her know. You may need your dosage upped. Or you may need to try something altogether different!
