Scary

My bg was just 401. My bg's have never been over 200 before.

I have felt kind of horrible all day.

I do not take any meds.

Headache, cold sweats, upset stomache. I called the doctor. He said to drink lots of water and keep checking bgs.

Okay at the movies I ate some red vines, but I have got away with it before.

Then I remembered I a got a cortisone shot in my knee for arthritis this morning.

I remember last time 2 1/2 years ago they told me that the shot could effect my bg so be careful, but they didn't remind me this time.

Any tips to help keep bg's down the next week or so. Other than the obvious of not eating candy at the movies.

Exercise, low carb meals and snacks, and fluids (water mostly) are the best way to keep your bgs low when you are on no meds. Cortisone shots effect people differently, for instance in me they don't bother my bgs at all...for a lot of others, they do act just as ingested steroids do and keep numbers high for a long time.

Just keep on top of checking your bgs and eat and exercise accordingly.

I was told to not exercise if my bg was above 300. Exercise can cause the bg to rise...

BTW, I'm scheduled to get a cortizone shot today myself. At least I have insulin to counter the effects.

Exercising with high bg's can cause serious muscle damage.

If you can get a reading in the 400 mg/dl range, my question is, why aren't you on meds?

I have never had a reading higher than 200 before. Not ever.

My A1c's have been in the range from 5.9-6.1. When I was first diagnosed nearly 3 years ago, the A1c was nearly 7 so I have been doing well with diet and exercise alone.

I was told the last time I had a cortisone shot that it could affect blood sugar and to be careful. The doctor forgot to warn me this time.

So that is why it was scary to have a 418 about 12 hours after the shot.

I am finally back down to the 120-150 range today. I have done that by drinking lots of water and eating no carbs at all or at least the minimizing them. Back to protein and vegetation only for a week or so.

Then maybe my knee will be better and I will be back to exercising and this won't happen again.

I think this was the problem:
My knee was hurting and I wasn't exercising.
I was being careless with my diet.
It is very hot and I have not been drinking enough water.
Then I got a cortisone shot in my knee.
Then I went to work and ran around not eating right some more.

Then I felt awful and found out my bg was so high.
