Morning FBG and the benefits of a midnight snack

Morning FBG and the benefits of a midnight snack

I’m still new to all this (type 2 diagnosed 6/22/07) and have morning numbers that are down, but still in the range of 130-140. I’ve switched to very low carb diet, take the metformin, exercise, and have started to loose weight, but the morning numbers don’t budge very much

Last night, in my usual bout of insomnia at 4am, I decided to eat something, just to see what happens (a nectarine and a handful of unsalted peanuts to be precise). Lo and behold, when I wake up at 8am, BG levels are at 111, the lowest I’ve seen in the morning

So, for those who struggle with high FBG, and are “blessed” with insomnia, I recommend a little snack. My guess is this effect is a variant of eat a green apple before bedtime (which does not work for me)

Anyone else try this?

I usually have a handful of nuts or a tsp of peanut butter or a piece of cheese before bedtime and have found this keeps my fasting number lower than if I eat nothing. Fortunately, once i'm asleep, I sleep til morning, so i've not tried the early a.m. eating.

Those fasting #'s are problems for many of us because of the "dawn phenomenon."

I agree... that said it is counter-intuitive that eating something will lower BG.

I thought fasting numbers were nothing to eat or drink (except water) after midnight.

So are those really fasting numbers?

Ok, they are morning numbers.

I'm just not the kind of guy that fasts 12 hours while he is awake, so i confuse the two terms, you are, of course , correct

I was not trying to correct you but more so asking the question as to what those numbers should be? We all know what fasting numbers should be what should those be?

okay, okay, just being a smarty pants....I struggle with the 'dawn phenomenom' (and with spelling it too). If my numbers are under 100 I am happy and for the most part they are when I wake up. I have noticed however if I eat protein at night (particularly beef) after 8:00 my numbers tend to be higher in the monring. I also can't eat as many carbs at dinner as I do at lunch. It is such a balancing act isn't it??????

My basal is finally set where I have almost perfect pre-meal and post-meal numbers. But I have to "eat" at bedtime so I don't go down to 40-70 in the morning. My doctor & I have played with my split dosage so many times, this finally just seemed like a good solution. So, I guess I have the opposite problem. If I'm eating to raise my morning numbers...why do you need to eat to lower yours?

Before my near-perfect solution (still working on it, and my body will change by the time I get it figure out) I was having high numbers in morning. But splitting my Lantus evened that out. I don't think is was so much DP, as the fact my Lantus was not lasting 24 hours with just a morning dose...and going too low with an evening dose.

i tried the midnight snack thing also. but this was in the early stages of me trying to figure out BGL and what my body was doing.

the thing that has helped me most is reduction in carbs. knowing which vegetables and fruits are best for me.

i adore raw cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage. so i have alot of these in my magnificent Ricky Stein vinaigrette (olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt, garlic and real dijon mustard). a recipe to "die for".......
