Red face Glumetza

Hi All, I was diagnosed with D in April. My readings were 128 so it was not that far advanced. I was put on a regimen of metformin 500mg 2x/day. Sept was my 3 month check up and my A1C was 5.3. I have also lost about 48 lbs since diagnosed with diet and much exercise. My one complaint to my endo was the bouts of diarrhea I would get periodically and the gurgly stomach, still after 3 months of metformin use. He decided to try another medication called Glumetza(which is another brand of metformin) that could possibly help. ... well here is my delemma, I have been taking Glumetza for 2 1/2 weeks and the diarrhea has lessened (but every once in a while I still have bouts) but have developed another side effect that I previously didn't have and that is a taste or I should say tasteless mouth. For the last 1 1/2 week, I have been noticing that food has not tasted the same and a couple of times I blamed it on the restaurants. Yesterday when I ate my lunch it hit me that it was as if I was eating nothing! I totally could not taste the sandwich I was eating at all! It was very weird but very disturbing.... I tried tasting other foods and nope, no taste. Has anyone ever come across this? I have decided that I would rather go back to the regular
metformin? I don't think giving Glumetza more time is going to help do you? I am getting very discouraged with the side effects of diabetic meds.....

Thank you for reading. Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bea

PS I am nervous about telling my endo to put me back on the regular metformin. Should I be?

You said you lost a lot of weight with diet and exercise. Could it be some of your new diet food causing the problem?

Glumetza is still metformin. It is just metformin that is encapsulated in a way that makes it release slowly in the upper digestive tract---extended release. I have never heard of loss of taste as a side effect of metformin.

I have heard that sometimes loss of taste is a temporary matter, unknown as to cause and unknown as to why it resolves. But if it were interfering in my life, I'd definitely bring it up at my next doctor's appointment.

I switched to glumetza.

Been on it for a few months now. Did notice a decent amount of relief from side effects, but haven't noticed any loss of taste.

I've (unilaterally) reduced my dose twice now and haven't seen a big rise in my numbers (which I find odd). I started at 2000mg and I'm now down to 1000 with much fewer side effects and only a little bit less stability in my numbers.
