| | | newly diagnosed Hello to all the good folks on this forum. I have been diagnosed with type2. I am presently on a 3X 1000 mg daily of metformin. I dont know if it is a side effect of the drug or from pushing myself too hard on a new exercise program but have a pain on the left side of my gut. I am hoping that its a muscle pull.
Also I am wondering if anyone here has had experience with taking daily doses of cinnamon, seems to be some studies done with some positive results. |

| | | Hi Oz, welcome! Glad you found the forum. It's great that you've alread started an exercise program. Keep up the good work.
Not sure about metformin causing your side pain...i'd tend to think it might be over-exertion.
Hope you've got a meter and are testing...A LOT! It's the best way to keep good control, and to see how certain foods affect your blood sugar. Many find a lower carb diet (avoiding rice, potates, bread, pasta) helps keep blood sugar stable. Exercise is also very important.
Not sure how long you've been on your metformin, but it can take up to 3 weeks to see optimal results from it. Taking it with food can help with any possible gastric side effects.
As for cinnamon, some say it helps, some say it doesn't. For me, I add it to my tea or s/f cider each day, as I feel it does help me.
You've found a great source of information and friendly people. Look around, ask questions, learn all you can about diabetes and you will do well.

| | | Hello and welcome Ozbuc!
I'm not a pro at all yet in moving around the forum, BUT, if you click on Forums, then Search Forums and type in cinnamon, you'll find more info on it.
I always put cinnamon on my oatmeal . . . .

| | | You sure you're on 1000mg 3x a day?
I thought 2500 or so was the max dose.
I did the cinnamon thing for awhile and it seemed to have a very small effect (couple of points or so, not really enough to say for sure that's what was doing it.) |

| | | Welcome aboard, oz.
If you were not accustomed to exercise before starting, I suspect that's the problem with the pain in the side. Most common complaint about metformin is some nausea, but that usually goes away.

| | | Hi Oz and welcome to the group!!
I had intense pain from taking Metformin. I had severe cramping in my abdomen.
The Nurse Practioner who was helping me when I was first diagnosed (and she was fabulous) told me about taking cinnamon. I did for awhile but did not notice a difference.
As you'll find out and many of us will tell you...things work differently on all of us...so try something out and test, test, test to see how it works for you.
Good luck and welcome again.

| | | Hi Oz,
DF is a fabulous spot to learn lots on diabetes.
The only side effect from metformin for me is stinky gas!
When I brew a pot of coffee, I put a teaspoon of cinnamon in the filter as well. I find it is keeping my sugars stable.
Good luck and take care

| | | replying back to my post Thanks to all for the kind words and support. MooreJames you were correct it is 2000 a day, I misread the label on the pill bottle, the stomach pain has gone away so I am back walking two miles a day and hope to increase that as time goes by.
Again thanks to all. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
