please give advice for 300 sugars

been dx type 2 for 9 years, im over 100 pounds overweight and have been running at 300 avg sugars for over a year now. Recently dx with a small cataract in one of my eyes. Time to get sugars down and be serious. Ill be getting lantus down the road when my patient asistance application is accepted and processed. ORAL MEDS glucophage and glucotrol no longer work period. Since im dealing with an internist and no insurance i have little options. Is there a strong oral med that might start to work and what is recommended. Should i start lantus and if i do how long before it starts to work. Is there anyplace i can get lantus at a discounted price before my patient assistanmce program app is processed. If you were my doctor and you know glucophage and glucotrol arent working anymore what would you do. I have been on glucotrol and glucophage from 1999-2003

It is the glucotrol that has stopped working, I think. If you can get assistance to obtain Byetta it would likely be very helpful for both appitite and glucose control. The combo of Byetta, Metformin and NPH insulin works well for me.

Are you making the best use of the "free" blood sugar control tools? .... reducing carbs, losing weight and getting exercise. Doing these things reduces insulin resistance. Injected insulin will start working immediately, but the less insulin-resistant you are, the better it will work. Good luck!

Yea, get walking and eat less! Insulin starts working immediately. Lantus has more-or-less a 24hr lifespan. It has something like a 3 or 4 hr ramp-up time. Not sure.

I have to agree, you lose 20 lbs and eat right, you may be pleasantly surprised. You'll probably end up feeling better than you have in years

I agree with looking into Byetta as an option.

I have lost almost 50 lbs now (almost 5 months). Of course, that is combined with carb control and exercise. My BGL's are much improved as well.

I agree with the other posts...i'd bump up the exercise, eat lower carbs and see what that does for you. There are a lot of medication options for you to try, but lifestyle modifications are still necessary for good control.

Amazing that your internist let you have 300+ blood sugars for that long without putting you on insulin or something! For your own health now and down the road, do WHATEVER it takes to get those blood sugars down.

Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Hi,

Sorry for your troubles. Quick question: do you measure the BG yourself, or relying on the internist results? I find that measuring BG helps me to focus on the problem, at least so far as diet goes

I'm at least that much overweight myself, but I've lost quite a bit since I was diagnosed.

I've found a strong connection between level of exercise and BG levels. If I skip a day of walking, mine goes up about 20 points. Then it takes several days of walking to get it under control again.

The good news is that all the walking has helped me with my weight.

Good luck, don't let this get you down. Fight through it. You can do it.

Allen
