| It is one of the oldest oral meds for diabetes. It pumps the pancreas to produce more insulin. One "side effect" is to hasten the demise of the insulin producing islets by prompting them to "over produce". So the choice was between inadequite insulin (high BG) and hastening demise of the islets - no brainer if you have insulin to fall back on once the islets go. You can have Hypo episodes but for me they were rare - usually not eating enough (Hah!) and failing to adjust the meds. Easily fixed with glucose tablets. I was on the stuff for about 12-13 years before I needed to go to insulin. It is generic and therefore cheap.
