I have been getting them for the last 15 years or so - long before insulin. I take 750 mg of Magnesium and 1000 mg of calcium before bed and that keeps them in check except for about once a year. The other common advice to to drink a glass of tonic water (for the quinine content) before bed.

Make sure you are generally well hydrated too. The air gets pretty dry this time of year, especially if you have a wood stove or something similar running.

I've been dealing with inflamation....high amounts of it which appear to be interfearing with the absorption of my insulin...so for the last little while I've laid off the insulin and no charlie horse....today I needed to get my numbers down so I took my insulin and all of a sudden wicked charlie horse....scared my poor kids cuase I was yelling rather loudley for hubby. It seems (just an observation) that when I use the insulin I get the charlie horses. I don't know....all I do know is that it hurts like you wouldn't believe. A c-section didn't hurt as bad.

I occasionally get them and yes, the pain is almost unbearable.

I don't use insulin however.

It always occurs during sleep and the quickest way for it to stop is to get out of bed and walk around.

Perhaps you are tensing up for your injection.

no it's hours later and not always at night....last one was on the flush....rather embarrassing to be yelling at the top of your lungs with your pants at your ankles! I just find it funny that while off levemir = no charlie horses. Take it and the charlie horses are back as bad as ever.
