Janumet, anyone?

My diabetes educator just switched me from Actos Plus Met to Janumet. The reason was to help me lose some weight. Does anyone have experience with this? Is it reasonable to expect some weight loss? He said that I should lose some weight just simply by stopping the Actos. I'm afraid to get too excited!

Kim, does your MD know about the switch? I'm sure it's not a big deal...but I'm curious why an educator would make the switch.

He is in my doctor's office. They work together. I see him every 3 months or so and her about every 6 months.

i have never heard of Janumet!

it appears to be a dual med containing Metformin and Januvia (as the name implies!).

As i understand it, the Metformin will try to reduce any insulin resistance you may have. At the same time, Januvia blocks the DPP4 signal and allows more signals to be sent to your pancreas telling it to make more insulin.

at the same time Januvia lets more signals get through to your liver telling it not to produce glucose!

sounds like a good combo to me. a triple whammy!

not sure why it is supposed to help you lose weight.

My DE said that just getting off the Actos would make me lose weight. I was on Actos Plus Met and gained weight. I keep forgetting that it is more of a result of quitting the Actos. He did say though that the hormone thing in Janumet would help control my appetite.

My father-in-law is on Januvia and has had no problems with it. He was started on it as his A1C had crept up and it seems to be working well for him so far. He's been on it for about 6 months now and his most recent A1C had decreased. He was on metformin before this.

as far as i can see Januvia is not available in Australia. hmmm.

i asked my GP about Byetta the other day and he said he had never heard of it.

on the other hand, my CDE knew all about Byetta because their center is the Australian trial center for that drug.

Januvia's mechanism could help me i think (DPP-4 inhibitor).

need to make more enquiries.

I went from Actos and Januvia to Actos and Janumet - my post meals BGs were high. The Janumet is Januvia plus Metformin

I had a lot of nausea with it and was switched back to Actos and Januvia plus Glumetza - a slow release Met.

The pluses of Januvia are no weight gain and preservation of Beta cells. I didnt gain weight but still struggling with after meal BGs

Correct - Janumet is Januvia and Metformin.

I have been on Actos Plus Met, which obviously, is Actos along with Metformin.

I have gained 20 pounds since first being DX and my doctor said it is most likely the Actos causing it. So, he just switched me to Janumet. So, I am still on the Metformin, just changed the Actos to Januvia. He said that just simply stopping the Actos should help me lose weight. I sure hope so!

The Metformin is the one that causes stomach problems, so that's why you had them when you added the Met.

Hey Kim! Hope the new meds combo works for ya! I'm pondering on whether to get the Byetta scrip filled that my doc did for me. I don't know if I can deal with the possible nausea. I can function with a lot of things going on, but nausea isn't on the list.

You can do this, Kim!! Keep up the good work!

Janumet was the first medication I was given and I had muscle twitches with it. Was fine the first three days and then I guess the Metformin must of kicked in since I spent the day in the restroom I'm on Januvia and Amaryl for now until the Januvia sample runs out. I was so hoping that medication would of been perfect for me. The combo was successful in bringing down my numbers so that frustrated me to give it up, then switching to Januvia alone my numbers just stagnated. Good luck and hope that the Janumet works for you!

Welcome, David, from a fellow Tennessean! The Janumet has worked very well for me so far. The Metformin alone seemed to help for awhile but then it sort of stopped, so that is when my DE added Actos. Actos put lots of water weight on me though, so he stopped the Actos and added the Januvia (Janumet). If you've already been used to taking Met, then the Janumet shouldn't cause any nasty side effects. Well, I didn't have any that is! Good luck with it and let us know how it's working for you!

Hey girl! Are you getting my e-mail replies because you never seem to respond again but you say you haven't heard from me in a while? I always reply back at least in a few days, are you not getting them?

Anyway, back on topic, I couldn't take the nausea with the Byetta either. NO THANK YOU!

I'm sorry you had problems with the Janumet! Thankfully, I haven't had the muscle twitches, they must be scary!!! I hope you can soon find the right combination of meds!

I had bad experience with Januvia. I had an infected cuticle that would not heal. I stopped taking it and the infection cleared up within a week. When I talked to my doc about it he just blew it off as a coincidence. I am not so sure.
Here is a link FYI.
