Starlix & a couple questions...

I was curious to see if any of you have been on a pill called Starlix? This was one of the first things my Dr put me on, and is one of the huge reasons I said ok enough of the pills just put me on insulin. ( I figure why try to mess with how the body functions, might as well put in what it needs..)As others have said with metformin this starlix was one of my raunchy experiences with a pill.

For those of you that are on ace inhibitors, do they work for you? My Dr decided to try one on me, I dont have " high" blood pressure ( standard was 130/80) mine was 133/84 ( close enough in my book, because I was sick as ever when they took it, stupid flu lol) Anyhow after I started with it I noticed a huge lack of urination and when I did urinate it was very dark and in tiny amounts, so I called in and my Dr's associate pulled me immediately off of it. After some research I found that this drug is processed through the kidneys, and since after the septic infection I had I already have some damage to my kidneys, am wondering why my Dr would even attempt to put me on something for blood pressure when mine isnt bad, and why he'd put me on a med that is processed through an already damaged organ.. UGH!

( Sorry my own little rant )
Anyhow my good news for the day is the sugars are looking a whole lot better *neener* lol I have a Dr's appointment tuesday and am wondering what new stuff he's going to decide to test on me, I have almost no tolerance for medications as is, tylenol makes me sick, so anyhow I kinda feel like a guinea pig...

Hi MissLynn

Sorry I don't know anything about Starlix as I just found out I'm Type 2 this past Friday. My Dr. also suggested an Ace Inhibitor but my Heart Pressure is perfect so I didn't fully understand either. From what I found out yesterday it does somewhat protect the kidneys. I haven't turned in my prescription yet because I still want to ask a few more questions and I still need to find out what my A1C is. What Ace Inhibitor did they put you on?

ve been on an ACE for two+ years now with hardly any issues. For the first year I had a very slight gagging sensation in the back of my throat which is common. eitehr it's gone now or I don't notice it.

It does help the kidneys.

Perhaps your urine changed because your sugars dropped.

Im on an ace inhibitor for blood pressure and also to protect the kidneys from my diabetes. Have been taking this since 1997. Initially it made me feel tired but I quickly got used to that.

Lisinopril is the med they put me on, and while yes I know the "benefits" of taking some of these, aparently it just didnt get along with my system. As far as the urine output dropping due to sugars, no, it was due to disfunction as the color was off and versus the amount of liquid intake and output it wasnt sugar related, thus why the other Dr pulled me off of it. His suggestion was " throw it away immediately". I have kidney problems already which are NOT due to diabetes and I do not have high blood pressure, two of the major reasons they put you on the ace's in the first place.

R2112 ask your doctor about the tests they ran, they probably have found protein in your urine, if they are suggesting the ace as a kidney helper, versus a blood pressure dropper. I wouldnt advise against using it, I had problems because in general meds just dont like me. I am the only person I know of thats ever had a bad reaction to this particular med.

Susie, ty for the link, thats where I initially found out how the ACE's are processed. Unfortunately I happen to be one of the rare ones that dont mix well with it.. *shrugs*

Miss Lynn, my doctor put me on Lisinopril too, but after three weekends int he ER with severe hives, they figured out it was the Lisinopril, and he took me off of it, and put me on Hydrocholorthiazide.

Yup Lisinopril, that's what they suggested I use. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll put that question on my list for this week.

I was on Starlix before. It was quite unusual apparently - my pharmacy had never heard of it and had to special-order it.

Diabetes of all Types does its most severe damage to your heart, kidneys, liver & brain. I was DX'd in '84 at age 35 as Type II. Insulin dependent since '91. Today I take 44 u's Levemir 2x day flexpen, 14 u's Novolog 3x day flexpen and 20 u's Symilin 2x day by inj., 1000 mg Metformin 2x day, 20 mg ACE Inhibitor (Lisinopril) 1x day, 40 mg simvustatin (Zocor) 1x day, 10 mg Flexoril 3x day, 25 mg Hydrochlorot 1x day, 81 mg Asprin 1x day. After 23 yrs of uncontrolled BG I am blind lft eye, >70% hearing loss, defiblrillator implant, sudden cardiac death syndrome, 5 heart blockages >70% (rt, lft & trnsvrs arteries), have suffered 3 major attacks. However, following complete renal workup last June I have relatively minor protein leakage and maintain an A1c of 6.5 - 7.5. I'm 58 years old! Oh yeah! I've had peripheral and autonomic (muscular) neuropathy for 25 years and have tried and found that very few, if any, of the "popular" remedies and/or medications have had much of an effect on them. Changes in the barometric pressure are when I am most affected by the symptoms of the autonomic type.

I have been taking Starlix for a few months - 120mg with Lunch and 60 with dinner. I was told to take it about 5 minutes before eating - as it is suppossed to stimulate the pancreas. i find that if i do not eat within 10 minutes i feel light headed and flushed - but is goes aways after eating.

I was also put on ace inhibitors (Altace) after diagnosis but have never had high blood pressure. My Dr reference as studay (Hope study?) - but i believe teh benfits were only see at 10mg - i was started at 2.5, then 5, then 7.5, now 10.
