| | | BGLs during Flu (My report) Well, i have had the flu for the past week. yesterday and today i have felt "mostly" normal. it is an unusual thing for me to get the flu.
this is the first time since 1987.
the symptoms i had were, sore shoulders and neck, sore tummy, sore sides, loss of appetite and high body temperature (102F). No sneezing or coughing or anything like that!
i first noticed the sore tummy on 23 Feb in the morning. wasn't sure what it was. my BGLs for that day were normal - lowest pre prandial (fasting 95). highest post pr was 123 mg/d/l.
next couple of days were much the same.
the tummy pains increased throughout Monday to quite severe.
took some painkillers. BGLs stayed normal.
Thursday morning i awoke at 54 mg/dL. triple checked this one. but it was right!!!
That was the start of the roller coaster i have been on ever since!!!
i have eaten very little. most i what i have eaten has been low carb. my BGL ranges for the last few days have been between 124 and 162 mg/dl!!! i haven't been over 144 in weeks.months!!!
this morning i awoke with a BGL of 131!!! i have yet to have any food and it is up to 146!!!
anyway, the flu seems to have waned. but the BGLs are really cocked up.
is this due to the fact that i could not exercise? is it just cos my body is in turmoil?
how long til i go back to normal?
anyway, bottom line of my report is that illness (such as flu) can really screw with your BGL numbers!!!

| | I'm sorry to hear you've had the dreaded flu but glad you are on the mend! I hear that we should always have a "sick plan" in place for times like these. Of course, I don't! LOL! I just plan to call or visit my doctor! I do think though that we are supposed to make sure we stay hydrated if we aren't able to eat. That's the norm for anyone but especially important for diabetics! Anyone who has all of the specifics, please DO share!

I hope your feeling better soon & your no's behave | well. i went to the my GP and he was pretty darn sure.
that convinced me!
lots of flu strains don't come attached with coughs and sneezes.
the last time i had it (1987) it was much the same.

| | | Yea... I think the muscle aches and high fever are the true tell-tale signs of flu.

| | | Wow, Joel, you and me both. Mine started on Thursday--I felt really rundown, had a little diarrhea and some stomach ache, but my blood sugars were fine and I had a normal temperature. On Friday it switched to cold symptoms--cough, sore throat, sneezing--but still no fever and my blood sugars were okay. On Saturday all h e l l broke loose with my blood sugars. I've been fighting them for the last three days, and have had to increase the basal rates on my pump by 90%--and I'm STILL having some extremely high BGs, even without eating much. The highest one I got was 307. I had a trace amount of ketones yesterday but they seem to be fine now. It's really crazy. I wonder if there's infection somewhere that just hasn't completely reared its ugly head yet.
The weird thing is that while I've had these symptoms, it hasn't been the worst I've ever had. I mostly just tire easily. Still no high fever, just high blood sugars. It's maddening.
Well, hope you feel better soon!
~Lisa
