Sweet taste

As a newly diagnosed diabetic, I am not yet familiar with all the signs and symptoms.
About a month ago (before diagnosis) I kept getting a really annoying sweet taste in my mouth, in the evenings. I had no idea what it was, but I still have it. It's like that after taste you get with artificial sweetners and it lasts for quite a while.
Could that be a part of D?
Anyone else had that? =)

Used to be one of the earliest ways to diagnose the disease - a fruity taste and breath. It should dissipate over time as you get better control. There's always sugar-free gum
