My husband who has no history of diabetes in his family is not overweight had blood test done and his fasting glucose was 102. Isn't that high for a non diabetic. He did fast for the blood work . Is this considered pre diabetes. He got them in the mail hasn't seen the Doc yet but it did show in the high range.

What does the test result mean?
High levels of glucose most frequently indicate diabetes, but many other diseases and conditions can also cause elevated glucose. The following information summarizes the meaning of the test results. These are based on the clinical practice recommendations of the American Diabetes Association.

Fasting Blood Glucose
From 70 to 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L) Normal glucose tolerance
From 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) Impaired fasting glucose (pre-diabetes)
126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) and above on more than one testing occasion Diabetes

It's high by just a couple of points but his doc might do a glucose tolerance test. If you have access to a blood glucose meter, you can do a version of it yourself of course.

Eat a normal meal and 2 hours from the first bite, check his sugar. It should be at or below 100. It could be hubby has a "normal" number that's a little higher than the average just like temperature - some people just run hot.

It would be helpful if you looked at previous blood tests to see where he was then compared to now. If his previous fasting bg was 98, 102 is well within a margin of error. If his fasting bg was 78, then I'd look at 102 as high.

Thanks great advice. I checked with all the test results we have back to 2004 and they are all 102 t0 107 so I guess he is a high normal.He will see his Doctor again in six mos.Doctor didn't have any remarks about the reading.I like that they mail us the results so we can refer back .

Even non diabetics get the Dawn Phenomenon, so it could be that his pancreas is working just fine, but the fasting is what gave him slightly higher readings.

Either way, it's not high enough to be any trouble It could be worth testing him before and after a meal at some stage though, just to make sure.
