Question is this normal

hi, i am in the process of being diagnosed I have all of the symptoms but a fasting blood sugar today did not confirm. since i have started resticting carbs i feel better and i have just eaten ice cream which has given me a headache. I have not had an undisturbed night sleep since december, is this normal. do i need a glucose tolerance test rather than just the fasting blood sugar. i really don't know what to do now - any suggestions greatfully received. i am not really oveweight - bmi 25 but have lost 16lbs with no effort and i am sooooo thirsty

It has been my experience that the results of a fasting blood sugar test is not the best indicator. I had symptoms for years, but the fasting tests showed nothing. It wasn't until I took the glucose tolerance test that it showed I had 'D'. I would go ahead and recommend to your doctor that you have a glucose tolerance test. It wouldn't hurt, and at least you'll know for sure.

thanks so much for the reassurance, I had a test last week 15 mins after eating breakfast ( cereal no sugar andwater to drink) my reading was high so i reckon it was almost as good as a fasting test and the nurse said she was sure it was diabetes but then the fasting test today showed low

Even with some of the symptoms of diabetes, I'd insist on an either an A1C test, which will show your average 90 blood sugar average or a glucose tolerance test(GTT) for a definitive diagnosis.

I would say that test is the best indicator.

You could also invest in a meter and test yourself as if you were a diabetic. Fasting and 2 hours post-meal.
