| | | Rewards! I am sure I am not re-inventing the wheel here, but I have a little system going that really helps me to stay focused and motivated; I would like to share it with you guys.
When I was first diagnosed it was a shock, but I took it in my stride and launched myself into counting carbs, exercise etc. However, even though I have lost lots of weight already, I was never a fan of exercise and was finding that I could always invent an excuse not to do it!
So I decided to reward myself for small goals acheived, whether it be weight loss or resisting temptation, or exercise.
Every Saturday I go to the market near my house (it takes 25 mins to cycle there, believe me, I KNOW!)
There are lots of inexpensive things there; little make-up purses, pretty hair clips, funky socks, cute scarves, unusual key chains, etc. I make a list of things I see that I really like.
I start my new exercise routine on a Monday and keep track of how "good" I have been doing it and for how long.
At the end of the week, I weigh myself and review my exercise plan. IF I have lost at least 1lb and kept to my exercise, I hop on my bicycle (more exercise ) ride to the market and let myself choose a little reward from my list.
I was determined that I would not reward myself with food, as this attaches way too much value to food and I have to re-think my whole attitude to food, makes it too important.
I have decided that when I lose the first 10 kilos (22bs) I can have a bigger reward (I am planning to get my hair re-cut and styled and coloured).
And so on...it might seem childish, but hey, whatever works for you. So far I have a new purse and some new lipsticks! In another few pounds time I will have reached that magic 10 kilo mark..I cant wait!
The rewards dont necessarily have to be something material. It could be a massage, or a trip to somewhere you always wanted to see or even a movie. The thing is, you have got to really want the reward, otherwise there would be no point, right? I am the original girlie girl so pink sparkly things work for me
This how I am dealing with this...anyone else got any tips? |

| | | I love it! I believe this is perfect. And when you have lost all the weight you need to, you have also learned that food isn't a reward! Exercise and little gifts are rewards instead! Too many people trip themselves up by hanging on to the belief that food is a reward of some kind. I believe it's nourishment we need instead. A friend down the street is doing something similar, but not as smart as you RIDING to the store to get your reward!
Great work Lulika!

| | We use the same reward to get our twins to do what they are supposed to do. They get stickers for being good in daycare, Cleaning up before bed, etc, when they fill their chart they get to pick out a toy. My motivation for working out is five things: First, I want to be around for my wife and boys. Second, I want to see my boys bar-mitzvahs. Third, I want to see my boys graduate from college. Forth, I want to see my boys get married. Fifth, if its not to much to ask I want to hold a grandchild some day.

| | | Good going, Lulika! I agree rewarding yourself with food attaches too much importance to food itself. Too bad I'm still thinking, "When I get my BG below 95, I'm going to eat such and such." Oh, well. We learn, we grow.
I think you've got a great routine worked out and if it works for you, then it's a GREAT idea! I'm a lipstick fiend myself, BTW. Lipstick is always a motivator for me. LOL.
L'chaim and Mazel Tov on your son's upcoming Bar Mitzvah!

| | This is something I do too. I love to read. I made a pact with myself that I would only buy myself a book for every 10 pound loss. I've now got two books (since I'm down 22 pounds now). Yes I read them quickly and want more immediately, but I'm keeping myself motivated this way.
A couple of local Weight Watchers friends and I are planning for our 50 pound loss to visit a Korean Spa here. We figure we'll be much better looking for a spa you have to be naked in at that point! |

| | WONDERFUL, Lulika! I've thought of the same type plan for me as well. I did already get a new haircut and color a couple of weekends ago. I needed it terribly and helped me to feel a bit better about myself along with my mini-goals I've accomplished! You are SO right ... food should NEVER be a reward. Right now, I have had the occasional thought about "treating" myself to a certain food but then I quickly decide that it just isn't worth it for that few minutes of satisfaction for my tongue! LOL!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

| | Sorry to disappoint, Dave, but the Korean Spas are for women only! They only allow men to come in to the reception area to buy gift certificates for their women...
Apparently these spas are wonderful, though I've never been to one, the reviews for the two near me are quite awesome. |
