hi I have diabetes 2

Hi I am brand to all of this, I just got tested ( my A1C) but I know I have diabetes, I have been testing my blood this last week and my numbers are very high ( to me) this is new when I was in the hospital last year over something else they tested me I was not even 110 all three days I was there, but I had a feeling lately that something was not right, my sugar levels have been between 165-265 no matter what I eat I have been good carb wise and no bread, sugar etc..I am scared I have not even seen a doctor yet. the test wont be ready till next week, and then all i see in the first time is a new GP, not even a endo doc, I am scared beyond words what should i do in the mean time?

Hi DeeDee, welcome to the forums. First off, take a deep breath and calm down. You are going to be okay. Its scary to find out you have diabetes, but as you'll see by reading the different posts here, there are many living relatively normal lives with diabetes. Most of us live lots healthier with diabetes than we did prior to diagnosis.

You say you've not seen a doctor...who did your A1C?

With the numbers you've mentioned, they are high, but you should be fine until you see your doctor in the next week or so. I'd suggest in the mean time you strictly limit your carbs, eating mostly salads, green veggies, lean meats, s/f jello, s/f pudding and lots of water.

My internist has managed my diabetes since diagnosis, and i'm doing fine. I would see an endo if I were on insulin or if I was unable to maintain good control of my blood sugars. Your doc will probably do a complete physical exam with blood work and may start you on an oral medication....or he may suggest you try to diet/exercise control. He'll probably want you to recheck in 2-3 months for more blood work. Have him give you a meter to check you blood sugar and write you a prescription for strips. Then, test often. Test 2 hrs after the first bite of your meals, so you'll see how different foods affect you and you'll be able to make smarter food choices.

A great book: "The First Year, Type II Diabetes," by Gretchen Becker...lots of good advice and easy to understand....a very worthwhile read for a new diabetic.

Hope you look around, post often, ask lots of questions, learn all you can about diabetes...you'll be fine.

Hi DeeDee. I know you're scared. I was. Terrified, in fact. That was in early February. Now, I've sort of come to terms with it and am happy with my lower numbers.

Make sure you see a doctor who will take the time to answer all your questions and also will write an order for you to take a diabetes education class. That will help enormously, as well.

Welcome to the forums. I have learned SO much here and I know you will, too.

Keep us posted on how you're doing. We care!

Gleny, I am far from being an expert, but it seems to me that if you are going to be afraid of something, you should be more afraid of the EFFECTS of too much blood glucose than the SIDE EFFECTS of medication that lowers blood glucose. Or, try to switch from negative thinking (possible side effects) to a positive thought (this medication is helping my body work right which is a good thing).

I haven't been too tempted to overeat or eat the wrong foods this last week because I have made sure I had plenty of choices of lower carb available to me. Lots of lower carb vegetables, lean proteins, a little dairy, a little fruit, a little whole grain.

Keep reading. Keep getting educated. Keep getting support.

Hi Deedee,

Welcome to the forums, you will find it a great place for information and the people here are always ready to help and support.

You have gotten some great advice so far, I would heartedly recommend the book Linda mentioned, she suggested it to me when I joined the forums and I found it to be easy to read with lots of useful information (almost as good as the forum

Do take a breath and try to calm down, it is shocking, but it's certainly not the end of the world.

Visit and post often

First try to relax, Drink lots of water and other no sugar beverages. Eat salads with low fat dressings and lots of veggies.

Try to get some moderate exercise even walking at a normal pace will help lower your sugar levels. When are you testing? How many times a day? While your numbers look high to you they are not at panic stage. Keep your doctor's office posted and they will be able to help you better.

Praying things will go well.

Your blood sugar has not been below 165, no matter what? What do you eat? Why do you think you are type 2?

Why were your blood sugar levels being tested when you when you were in the hospital last year? Was diabetes suspected then?

If you do have diabetes, you will be able to handle it fine, most likely. There is some stuff to learn , you may have to take some meds, and you may have to make some changes, but it sounds as if you are already allowing for that in your awareness of your eating.

I was diagnosed 15 years ago, and I'm still here. I'm way healthier than I was at diagnosis, too. At the time, my worry about it was close to panic. I started some new projects that had nothing to do with health or diabetes, just to take my mind off of it. Otherwise, at first I couldn't get it out of my mind. So, I built some kitchen cabinets (from a kit) and started enlarging my garden. Well, really the garden is great for diabetes, both in the exercise and the vegetables, but I did not think about it being for my health specifically....If you find yourself close to obsessing over your health, distract yourself with other endeavors, something fun, creative, productive, spiritual, or whatever does it for you.

Our other newbie Glendy seems afraid of his medicine, but really most people don't have trouble with the most commonly prescribed medicine for type 2, that is, metformin. So try not to let Glendy's fear spill over to you. Personally, I am really greatful for metformin!

Some people go onto insulin for a while when they are first diagnosed. That can bring your blood sugars right down, and get you into a state where you can meet success with other methods more quickly. Did you know that it isn't usually recommned to even exercise when your Blood glucose is high, say over 180? So then how can you build muscles and exercise if your BGs are that high upon diagnosis? That is one reason why metforin (or other meds) and insulin can be helpful--it gets those BGs down low enough for you to be able to use other methods, too. So some of those who start insulin at the beginning only use it for a month or so until the other management techniques can suffice. Other techniques? --You know --a limited carbohydrate diet, increased exercise, increased muscles mass, weight loss, metformin or other meds including other injected hormones. Some people include techniques such as a nightly glass of wine, or various supplements. You'll get the chance to learn about those things.

Really assuming you have type 2, there could be a lot of options. And I think that is a good thing.
