Exercise

Type 2's! What is your favorite exercise? You know it prescribed for most all of us. For me the favorite is undeniably gardening:

Digging, lifting, tossing, dragging, chopping, sawing,

Lopping , snipping, plucking, standing, crouching, squatting, reaching,

Yanking, axing, pounding, scooping, pouring, broadcasting,

Raking, braking, aerating, hauling,

Pinning, tying, scraping, hoeing, slicing, crumbling, spraying,

Clipping, picking, mowing, attaching, latching, smashing....

I like to play golf and walk 9 holes after work sometimes.

Lately, since being diagnosed, I've been hitting the gym hard again. Resistance training and cardio.

I also enjoy cycling.

I live alongside the Illinois Prairie Path. I walk parts of it 2 or 3 times a week. I have marked out 1,2,3,5,and 7 mile waypoints as well as 3k, 5k, and 10k. Most days I do the 5 mile walk.

I guess it depends on what you mean by exercise. well other then that I love to run and hike in the Mountains or rock climbing can be fun. My wife and I take the boys for a walk around the inlaws neighorhood just about every week-end . My eclipical trainer broke the other day so I guess new thing is the stationary bike.

I figure my new exercise plan will be:

1. Giving the girlfriend a longer 'workout' than 5mins - gonna aim for 7mins. Cant start out too quick ya know!

2. Gonna run to the health food store, instead of running to my local bar.

3. Going to actually put to use a gym membership, i've been renewing for god know's how long.

4. When at the gym, going to do some productive work, instead of looking at the ladies and the He/She's.

5. Gonna play Softball, Basketball, Football again. Havent done that in many many years.

Achillies: you have the honor sir. We have some extremely hilly courses in my area. Technique goes out the window long before the 18th hole but it's a great workout!

Petruchio: My neighborhood walk is nice, I've mapped out way points too. I so wish there was a nice woodsy trail near home, so far just a little teaser (2 blocks long). You're fortunate to have that.

jacobsam622: Here we have a little thing called "mud season" (other places call it 'spring'). They frown on hiking the mountain trails until after Memorial Day. I can't wait!

mob: you're killin' me!

I like a lot of exercises, so that's what I do.

At the moment it's mostly walking, but have been slaking off recently. I actually don't like walking, it's just so boring having an iPod on helps.

I really enjoy swimming and I'm a strong swimmer, but getting to a pool etc, is not easy.

When I shift some more weight the plan is to get cycling. My daugthers plan for me is horse riding, haven't done that in 15 years, couldn't inflict myself on a horse, would have animal rights people taking out a hit on me!

My ultimate goal, when I have lost enough weight and built up fitness is to play at least one game of rugby, think they have a seniors team (over 40's) at a local club. I used to be darn good at it, played tight head prop (front row), of course that's probably gobbledegook to my North American friends

Yoga is quite good, since it doesn't take too much strength, and energy.. and some of the steps are quite easy.. But, as the OP mentioned, gardening is also a very good form of excercise.. if you have a garden to work on.

Smal tasks like climbing stairs, dusting the rooms etc are other forms of exercise that will benefit everyone.

I am a walker as well. I have marked out several courses around my residence of various lengths which I choose given the amount of time I have. I walk at a steady 4mph so I know exactly how long a course will take me. In winter, I use my treadmill, although I must admit, it is getting harder and harder to talk myself onto it every day.

Even though I have a gym membership, as of late I have stuck with "informal" exercise: I walk at least once a day... the warming Spring weather helps with that, so I take walk-breaks like some might take smoke-breaks. I park at the far-end of the car park. I walk down the stairs from my office... it's 6 flights so I ride the elevator/lift up.

I hated exercising before DX, but as it IS a must for us type 2's, I walk for an hour a day on the treadmill. At first I was bored, but I put on my iPod and I have found that it is a great mind-clearing task. The pounding of your feet sets up a rhythm and I now look forward to using it as my thinking time...

Just look at my name and you'll see my second favorite activity. I play often.
My favorite activity is just not available often enough to rely on and while it might be the wildest 2 minutes of my month, I just don't get enough things to laugh about. What did you think I was referring to

I walk. I average about 30 minutes a day. My hubby and I walk to the church at the corner and walk around their parking lot.

I hate exercising. I'm pathetically lousy at every sport you can think of, don't care for hiking and I can't swim. I like riding a bike, but can't afford to get my old bike refurbished. It desperately needs new tires. Gyms are too expensive. So, I walk. I have a good pair of Reeboks, so I walk.

Hate to admit it but...

I have not had the energy to get up and exercise. I get all ready during the day, but by the time I get home, I am exhausted and tend to just veg out.. maybe its BG related. I sure hope so..

Hey there Bluemax! I've seen that phenomenon many times, and what it is is that you're hyped up at work. You're energy levels are high. Once you get home and can relax for a minute, that energy disappears.

What you need to do is to exercise before you get home. You'll find that you'll still have the energy to exercise, as long as you don't go home. Go somewhere else first. Is there somewhere you can walk outside your workplace? If not, is there someplace on the way home where you could stop and walk?

It's better if you're nowhere near your home. Just seeing your home makes you begin to relax. You see your home, and you're day is over, so your body goes into relax mode.

I've experienced it many times, so I know it's real. Try it once or twice and see what happens.
