vision problems diagnosed month ago

Hi , Second post here. Diagnosed type 2 month ago with scores in the 400-500 range. Taking 1000 mlg metformin twice a day. Weight is good with none to lose but have reduce my scores down to an average of between 100 -130 in the morning and under two hundred the rest of the day with lots of days in the low 100's. Everything went blurry last month. Eye doctor did a test and new prescription. Got new glasses and store told me if my eyes changed they would make new pair for no charge. My eyes have changed and saw the doctor today. Vision is better in both eyes but store says they will only make one more pair of glasses. They want me to come back next week for another test. Advised me to buy a couple of pair at the dollar store till then. Just looking for other peoples experience early on with there vision to try to get a handle on what to do.....Thanks

Wish I could find the tread that has been running on this. It does take time for the body including the eyes to adjust to the blood sugars stablizing. THis causes the blurred vision for a period of time. For most folks it does seem to settle down after a few weeks. Maybe someone else will remember the name of the tread.

My vision has changed every year since being dx'd with type 1 five years ago, and I've had to get a new pair of glasses each year.

Usually when I go for my yearly eye exam, my doctor will ask me how my blood sugars have been running. He performs the eye exam and makes notes of any changes from the year before. He then has me come back in two weeks and re-exams my eyes again (at no charge) before sending out the script for the new lenses.

As long as your blood sugars are running high, you most likely will continue to have vision problems until you get them down to within "normal" range.

Hi there,

I had a similar experience around the time I was diagnosed, the advice given to me was not to rush out and get new glasses until I got my blood glucose down/under control. I'm glad I followed the advice as my eyesight returned to normal (and slightly better) after a short time.

I'm raising my hand high in the air. I'm still in the blurry stage and it's been a week now. I went initially and got a pair at the Dollar Tree which was fine for a couple of days. I've also been using both my prescription glasses in order to drive--couldn't see anything and far away was bad. Those have been helping but now can't see close up and needed to run back out to find a pair to read something, anything with. The pair I bought, you would think I was really bad with the strength. These aren't perfect but at least I can see to type. I'm still frustrated but asked the question here and I'm not so frightened now. Just ansy to get my vision back, it's like someone smeared vaseline over my eyes and I keep wanting to wash it out. I'm trying to be patient and I SO bless the day my eyes normal for me. I'll be so thrilled to get back into my contacts again. Hang in there with me

Sorry if you got this twice I think I erased it. I agree this has been very frustrating. I have old glasses, new strong glasses, dollar store glasses which right now are the best for a buck go figure!!! My levels have been pretty good the last week or so and doc says if I am still the same next week they will make a new pair with different strength. But then what???? With being new to this who knows.....Guess I will keep all the ones that have in a draw if I ever do get straight just in case!!!!

I have not been dxed yet but I can tell you that you are lucky if your eyes can be corrected during this time. I had lasik back in 1999 and I had perfect vision. Then about three years ago my left eye went bonkers. This year is has become non usable and not able to be corrected at all with glasses etc. So if you are able to get glasses that correct your vision feel lucky. Go back to the store as the vision changes and tell them they messed the lenses up. Most places will change the glass for free. I used Lenscrafters back in 99 as I had to wear glasses while waiting for blood vessels to retreat in my eyes from overuse of contacts. Good luck.

Bob...........because you were just dx'd a month ago, I would still meet with the eye doctor next week, but I'd wait at least another 4-6 weeks before getting a new pair of lenses. Your still working on getting your blood sugars down, so I'd wait a bit longer until you're seeing steady blood sugar results.

I believe high glucose make your eyes larger. This changes the eyes focul point, also why you need your blood vessels check in your eye since they are under more pressure. When you get the glucose under control your eyes get smaller, the focal point changes again. Eyes are amazing.. they adapt. Eventually your eye will adjust to the new focal point and your vision will improve. Also if you have a bad day and your glucose spikes your vision will become temporarily blurred, when the glucose settles down everything will be in focus again. Also if you hit a new low your vision will be blurred again as your glucose rises from a low your vision will clear up.
