Strange test results

Hi everyone

I have seen the counselor and have started the food management. I just received my lab work copy through the mail today.
Tot Chol 97
HDL 32
LDL 46
Trig 97
FBG 149
A1C 6.9

I did not know that it was possible to have diabeletes and low cholestorol and triglycerides??? I guess its not a problem since my DR did not call, but mailed the results.

Has anyone else seen numbers like this?

You are not alone. Check out my numbers. I attribute it to my low carb way of eating.

I'd guess than you are also of average or below average weight and do not high high blood pressure. Those symptoms are part of what is called metabolic syndrome that most Type IIs have.
If you don't have it, much better ... you have a lower chance of heart problems.

My own opinion is that a Type II without metabolic syndrome has a disease as distinctly different from those with it, as a type I does.

I did not have metabolic syndrome when diagnosed. When I was diagnosed (15 years ago) I think my BP ran around 105/60, as it did for years, despite being greatly overweight. My cholesterol levels have always been pretty good, not levels that a doctor would seek to medicate except for my being diabetic.

However, about 3 years ago my BP started creeping up. Then it started leaping up!, so now I take lisinopril and have BP like I used to.

While I agree that there are probably different root causes among Type 2s, I don't know if metabolic syndrome versus no metabolic syndrome will be one of the things that distinguishes them.

Hey, those cholesterol numbers are awesome! Be thankful! My triglycerides were Waaay down on my second round of bloodwork, after eating low carb and getting my BG under control. They were 103, down from 206. Still working on my cholesterol. My BP was 114/80 at my last office visit, but I've had elevated BP for years, long before I was diagnosed, or ever was running elevated BG.

And as Real4 said, you have a much lower risk of heart trouble. Say thank God it all works and be happy!

Sometime when I was 56 mine started to look like that when they started climbing and the HDL dropping. That was 5 years after dx and about 6 months later my total was pushing 200. So they can change fairly quickly, whenever that magic genetic date happens it happens.

Hi,

I don't have my Cholesterol numbers to hand but each time I'm tested my Doctor simply says "Your cholestrol is text book perfect, I wish I had your results" so I guess they are fine. I have never had any problem with cholestrol (frantically look for some wood to touch) before or since DX.

Bluemax,

I have to disagree with everyone here. You have something wrong. Are you on a statin? If so, stop immediately. See your dr. Despite uninformed claims that very low cholesterol is good, it is certainly not good. You may very well have ongoing effects from this condition, including depression, inability to concentrate, hormonal and endochrine failures (i.e. low testosterone) and a non trivial increased risk of cancer. It may very well be the case that your diabetes is caused by the cholesterol problems you have.

If you are eating low fat, stop that right now. Eat some good fat!!! Take a fish oil, in fact take three.

Don't let anyone tell you that low cholesterol is desirable, particularly if it is making you unwell. If by some fluke you have naturally low cholesterol, then fine.

Thanks everyone.
Brian, I think you hit the nail on the head here. Up until about 6 mos ago, I had elevated cholesterol numbers. I have been taking Vytorin 10/20. I stopped that yesterday. I am not an exerciser at this point, but that is in my near future. So, I don't think I should have a marathon runners numbers. I am finding myself stopping in the middle of sentences to look for words in normal conversations, so I do believe it may be affecting my cognitive processes.

I am in the same boat. A1c is 7.0 and my total chloresterol is like 138. So.. I treat myself to a nice medium rare prime rib with brocolli and mushrooms once a week
