| | | My doc gave me the following ways to bring it up:
1. Exercise
2. Small servings of nuts (almonds etc) every day
3. Bringing bad cholestrol down
I've also learned here that red wine and food rich in omega 3 fatty acids helps too.
Check with your doc or healthcare provider too. |

| | | The doctor said get more of my protein from veggies and less from animal products like meat, eggs, milk. Meats should be lean cuts.

| | | i brought my good # up and my bad number down by adopting a restricted carb diet.
i increased consumption of eggs, meat and cheeses and reduced consumption of fruit and other carb laden foods (potato, rice, pasta etc).

| | | I've been able to increase my HDL to almost 100 since I started taking 300mg of pantethine twice a day. I also follow a very low carb diet of primarily vegetables, eggs, nuts, cheese and meat.

| | All cholesterol is good. Eat good food (reduced carb), get lots of exercise, and control stress (take up a hobby) and your cholesterol will look after itself.

| | | The only way I know of is problematic for Diabetics - Niacin therapy will raise HDL. It requires massive doses - 2, 3 or more grams a day and requires acclimation or you will scratch your skin off. The problematic part is that it carries substantial risk of triggering glucose highs. I only did this under the supervision of my Lipid doc because of my extremely low HDL levels (14-18 range) caused by my mixed familial lipid problems.

| | Babyslon,
The two cholesterol numbers you should be concerned with are HDL and triglycerides. I don't think the other numbers have much use. First, reduce your triglycerides by limiting your carb intake and keeping your blood sugar normalized (well controlled). Try to target to get your Tris down below 150 mg/dL, and ideally below 100 mg/dL. Increase your HDL as outlined above with exercise, eat lots of good fats (even saturated fats) and a healthy glass of dry red wine every evening. A good target for HDL is greater than 60 mg/dL. The higher the better. To learn about fats, I would recommend Amazon.com: Know Your Fats : The Complete Primer for Understanding the Nutrition of Fats, Oils and Cholesterol: Mary G. Enig: Books.
