Metformin side effects

Anyone know if shortness of breath, not extreme shortness, is a side effect of Metformin?

Why do you ask?

Metformin Information from Drugs.com

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these symptoms of lactic acidosis: weakness, increasing sleepiness, slow heart rate, cold feeling, muscle pain, shortness of breath, stomach pain, feeling light-headed, and fainting.

Obesity and Type 2 are strongly associated. Most people assume that Obesity is the cause and Diabetes the effect. It is equally valid to suggest that the underlying metabolic disorder which leads to the Type 2 causes the Obesity.

I don't have any other symptoms, just a little tightness in my upper chest. I'll call to be on the safe side. Thanks for the link.

When first diagnosed and my #s were running high, I did notice a little chest discomfort. Then again during shingles when I was in the 180's...same discomfort.

Wouldn't think its your metformin, but you should probably let your doc know about any cardiac type symptom.

I called and left her a message. Now, the wait to get a call back. It's Friday and I know the office can be a busy place. I wonder if I'll have to go in...

Hope you're feeling better by now, and that this is nothing. I don't remember any shortness of breath on the Met, but I'm glad you called the doc, anyway.

I got a call back from the Endo's nurse and she asked if there is any pain. I told her no and she said it's not a side effect of the Met. If there was pain, that'd be a different story. She did tell me I could call my PCP if I felt I needed to. I'll see how the day progresses.

I didn't have these symptoms. Please keep a watchful eye and if the shortness of breath continues or worsens, please just go to the ER and make sure everything is "ok"!

I didn't do very well on Metformin and a general heaviness in my chest was just one of the symptoms I suffered from while on it.

That's how I feel. Did you dr. ever agree it was a side effect of the drug?

He agreed that I shouldn't be taking any medication that made me feel ill. That wasn't the only side effect I was experiencing but I stuck with it for over a month hoping they would subside. I am now on Actos but my blood sugar readings are much worse so I suppose I will be switching to something else.

I haven't had the pleasure of taking Metformin "yet" but was almost prescribed it earlier in the year.

My doc was also going to put me on blood pressure med too, Lopressor. I wondering were you put on any sort of BP med? These are known to cause shortness of breath.

Just a thought...

Thank you R2112 for mentioning that BP meds can cause shortness of breath. The doctor just changed my BP meds and I am experience shortness of breath. Nothing hurts, I just get short of breath when I exert myself. I did not notice this before I started the new med. I have to go back next week for her to see if I am doing all right on the new med. If things are not better, I am sure she will change it again.

If the shortness of breath was cause by running to the bathroom as fast as you possibly can and the bathroom is like 1/2 mile away then yeah.
