8.33 on my GAD antibody test

Does anyone know what this means? Normal range is like below 1. something. Doc said it was high- so I don't really know what that means.

I suspect that means you're going to be diagnosed as type 1.5.

But I'm not familiar with what the reference ranges are, but if the doctor said that's high, it probably means the levels are elevated and probably indicates autoimmune attack, especially if your c-peptide levels are lower than normal range.

It means that you probably have autoimmune diabetes (Type 1 or LADA). Have you had your C-peptide done as well?

It says the reference interval is from 0.00 - 1.45. Mine is 8.33!!! My endo said he couldn't beleive it was high. I asked him if that meant I was LADA or 1.5 and he said regardless of the diagnosis, the treatment is the same. Why the **** do I want a correct diagnosis? Why is it so important to me?

I don't believe that. As much as we'd like to think so, the treatment options you get if a doctor thinks you're Type 2 are just not the same.

Why wouldn't you? If some doctor said to me that the diagnosis didn't matter, I'd say, "yeah, it doesn't matter TO YOU."

Sounds like maybe there was some miscommunication, I believe most doctors would think that a correct diagnosis is extremely useful to ensure that proper treatment is achieved.

That said, in a sense, the more important differential is between the type 1/1.5/LADA diagnosis and the type 2, because the treatments are quite different. The treatment for type 1 and type 1.5/LADA is pretty much a wash as both groups end up with minimal beta cell function and need to treat with insulin, injected or by pump.

I know nothing about this test but I do know that I'd want a doctor who cared a bit more!!! Good luck getting the diagnosis that you need and deserve!!!

First off calm down, when your stressed its harder to control your levels.

Second, Type 1, 1.5 or LADA it doesn't matter, what matters is that your are on the autoimmune side and not the insulin resistance side because we are better just kidding, but knowing which side your on will make it easier to control your numbers.

It might also be important to your insurance companies. Some of them won't cover things like pumps or even a sufficient number of test strips if you're coded as Type 2. And if you are LADA/1.5, then you might be taking medications that aren't even doing any good.

Because if you are LADA, and it looks like you are, the sooner you start using insulin the better your long term prognosis is. Not using insulin will hasten the demise of your beta cells, making you fully dependent on injected insulin. Whereas using appropriate amounts of insulin and limiting carbs from early in the onset process retains some beta cell function for many years. It is a lot easier to control your diabetes when you are still producing insulin. But insulin is not used in early treatment of T2. Which is why getting a correct diagnosis and treating it appropriately is important to you.

Hope you also had a c-peptide done to establish a base line for insulin production. A reduction in your insulin production would indicate that a change in treatment has become necessary. Something like 20% of type 2s test positive for GAD antibodies.

If I am remembering correctly...My C-Peptide was 1.5. Scale being 1.0-3.0 I beleive. Still no smashing results.

Bluesky- I am already on insulin. I take 24 units of Lantus at bedtime. And I take byetta 2 x's a day.

What should be my next step to getting a proper diagnosis without coming off as a know it all....I dont want to undermind (?sp) my doctor. I really like him.

I think being on insulin for immune would mean MDI or pump... using fast acting to cover carbs, as well as a basal as you have now.

I agree 100% it is important to know you true diagnosis and that should be important to your doctor as well. The insurance point is also a good one.

I'm going to be very blunt.

Its good that you like your doctor, however, if he isn't that concerned as to getting a proper diagnosis, then I would look into getting a new doctor. He may be a likable fellow, but your health is more important than being friends. Please find out if he understands the differences between autoimmune disease that destroys beta cells responsible for insulin production and insulin resistance. If he doesn't understand the difference then you need to request to see a new doctor or an endocrinologist.
