I stared on Lantus last night. Any suggestions or advice? I am also going to keep a log of all my food intake and test seven times daily, at least until things get regulated. I am only on 10 units but was a bit surprised about how high (235) my fasting number was this morning. That is just about where it has been on no medication. I thought because I was injecting it, the effects would be immediate.

Ron, can't give you any advice about the Lantus, but I wanted to see hear your thoughts about the injection. Was it as hard to stick yourself as you thought it would be? Was it painful?

I know so many people worry about having to inject, and I found Byetta to be quite painless. Hoping your experience was the same.

Sounds like the evil DPs to me. Lantus is very poor at tackling them.

With Lantus you have to be careful about crashing in the night. You should plan on some 2-4am tests to learn your behavior. If you are one of those that stays flat or high, you'll have much better luck getting those morning numbers down. It will limit how high a dose you can handle.

Be cautious of mid-afternoons too. Many of us drop then too.

Ronman, I have been on Lantus for about 6 weeks now. Went from a 10 unit dose to 70. I never saw any real reduction on morning fasting numbers. So then had to go on insulin shots hope it works better for you.

As I increased the dosage I started to have problems with it stinging like a bee sting. If it starts to sting as you increase your dosage slow down the injection and that will help.

Dawn Phenomenon. The hormone boost just before waking that makes you insulin resistant.

Lantus is flat. the DP is typically a sizeable hump.

Work with your Doctor on how to adjust doses and try having some protein before bed. Also, some find that they get better reactions when splitting the doses approximately 12 hours apart. Sanofi Aventis states that Lantus is a 24 hour dose, but many find it only lasts about 20 hours. Monitor throughout the day and test a few aextra times to see how you react to it.

The shot itself it relatively painless, much less so than poking your fingers for the blood test.

My BG readings have actually been going up throughout the day. Just took one and it read 354!

No, that was my pre-lunch reading. They are having me test 7 times daily for a week.

It's not unusual for a type II to require 50 or 60 units as a basal Lantus dose. The general, usual proceedure is to increase dosage by 2 unit every two or three days until things are under control.

Just did my 2-hour post meal reading...165. Quite a drop considering I am not on any additional medication. I am not supposed to report back these numbers for a week but I guess if they stay high, I may call them in sooner.
