| | | Well I have done this before and was asked to go to the bathroom . my husband and I got up and left that restaraunt promptly and we never went back . I was very uncomfortable so we went somewhere where we could feel comfortable . It is a local place called Johhnys and I know the manager and he knows I am a type 1 diabetic and he does not have a problem with anything I do test or otherwise at the table . |

| | I refuse to goto a toilet/washroom to inject - they are not hygenic enough for me
I will inject wherever I am eating, if someone comments I explain why and they usually shut up otherwise they get a mouthfull as I didnt choose to get diabetes so why should I hide away
I will even inject at my mates burger van on the high street in town if I am eating

| | | Busy restaurants, I usually inject at table, right through clothes.
If it's a fine dining atmosphere and a little more subdued, then I simply visit the ladies room.
It's my decision one way or the other.
Sometimes I have to make a decision if injecting in public is going to involve an investment of precious time...explaining to onlookers that "it doesn't hurt", "No, it doesn't have to be refridgerated", "Yes, I just injected right into my clothing" and such. I can be late for a lot of appointments answering all the "dialogue".
So, for me, it's a personal choice each time...for each situation. But never an embarassed decision. This is how we educate people.
What I love these days is that many people will ask "Have you ever thought about a pump?" which is an improvement over "My grandmother was brittle and couldn't feel her toes"...progress comes in small increments, right? |

| | Pre-pump I always injected at the table. If someone looks, that's their problem, not mine! I refuse to inject in the bathroom, those places are filthy! Of course, I'm also the one who breast feeds her kids at the table too, bathroom is too filthy for that too...would you want to eat your meal in a bathroom?
Sometimes it's tricky to be discreet...but it's relatively easy to teach yourself the tricks. |

The first time(s) it feels like everyone is gawking their eyes out, but that feeling will disappear after a while. Diabetes is nothing to be ashamed of

| | | I tried to be discrete at first... then realized, nobody ever notices!
Now I just do it under the table, lifted shirt or through the shirt depending on what I'm wearing. Hubby doesn't even notice most of the time and asks... "did you take your shot?" "Yes, while we were talking about such and such... " "Really??"

| | I inject right at the table or in public.
I was diagnosed two months ago and for the first two weeks I would always go to the bathroom. I finally decided I didn't want to do that forever so I started injecting at the table with people I felt comfortable with... and now I do it all the time.
I went to two concerts in the past month and both of them I had to do my lantus shot during the concert. 10 o'clock rolled around and I just sat down and got it over with. (most were too drunk to notice/care)
Same at a baseball game.
I decided I don't care what people think, plus if they ask questions I can explain it to them. That way more people know about diabetes

| | | Just do it. Stomach, arm, leg. I wouldn't suggest the behind area out in public. Pens certainly make this easier than ever to shot up in public. You CAN go through clothes (except jeans) if you use a long enough needle... I wouldn't do it with the shorts or mini's though as they may not get in deep enough.
I've had a few stares (very few) but no one has ever asked me to stop or go to the loo to do it. I've met a few other diabetics this way as well just by pulling out my pump.
My overall take: if people are allowed to smoke in public then I'm going to take my shot in public.
