Metformin vs Metformin ER

Any opinions, does anyone think that one is superior to the other?

When first diagnosed, I started metformin 500 mg twice a day. I asked the doc to switch me to the metformin ER, as i'd read it kept numbers more stable throughout the day, as the extended release caused it to peak later than with regular metformin. I had equally good results with both.

If someone is having a lot of the "gastric" problems with regular metformin, it might be worth it to consider the extended release. I did find the extended release pills to be bigger than the regular ones, but it wasn't a problem for me.

I don't know. I was started on Metformin ER and I still had gastric problems when I first started taking Met.

I've done both and can't tell the slightest difference in how they function. I'm on Met ER now.

The regular Met gave me a great deal of nausea. I took it for a year, and I used to get motion sick in the car all the time. Since I switched to ER in May, I have not felt sick at all. I also have have better numbers by switching from 850MG to 750MG ER Version. My last A1C 7/10/08 was 6.0. My best ever!

If someone has GI problems with Metformin instantaneous release,Metformin ER may be better for them.Bear in mind that
Metformin IR reaches peak concentration in 3-4 hours,Metformin
ER in 6-7 hours.
Cheers
Eddie
