Thank you everyone! I am feeling better. Headache lasted for about 2 days. However my BS has been only getting worse. My new AIC came in and despite the extra strict carb control and added exercise it went up

But on a better note my CRP went from 12 (6 months ago) to .75 this time!!!!! Yeah!!!!!! For those who don't know - CRP is a marker for inflamation.

so on to finding new and inovative ways to bring down my blood sugar.......perhaps trying another round of micro current or hypnotherapy. Not sure I'm quite ready for accupuncture yet.

A couple weeks ago, my BG kept creeping upward. I'd do corrections... and it'd creep up again.

I went to the chiropractor to see about some neck pain. Voila! My blood sugar stabilized the next day.

Ellie,

Were your meter readings consistent with your HbA1c readings? Did they go up as well? Was the rise after meals or fasting? A HbA1c corresponds to an average blood sugar of 150 mg/dl. That is getting kinda high. Perhaps if I knew a little more about how you going high, I might be able to make some suggestions.

My meter average has been increasing over the last month - average is up to 129 or so. (I test 6 to 7 times a day depending on exercise)

I am going higher both fasting and 2 hr.
3 months ago - fasting lower than 115
2 hr after - below 110
Now - fasting above 120 most days
2 hr - above 130

I have noticed that meals that used to be good (2 hr 104) (chicken and broccoli or cauliflower) are now making me go into the 150's and I am staying high longer.
Example:
Breakfast this morning was 2 eggs, about 1 tblsp cheese, 1/4c. potatoes and peppers. I was 146 at 2 hr. and 120 at 4 hr.
3 months ago I would have been back down to high 90's at the 4 hr mark.

What changed you may ask,
I upped my exercise - mixing in swimming, the gym and walking. I average 5 to 6 hours now consistantly.
I also got real strict about the carbs - cut out the occassional 'treat' of a 1/4 to 1/2 piece of bread once a week.
I cut down but did not completly eliminate the dark chocolate (I had to keep something)
I did add 1/4 c. fruit (blueberries) 2 x week for mock smoothy.
My diet tends to be only protein and vegi - nutritionally not very balanced toward the antioxidants - so I was trying to branch out a bit - include some different colors.
Migraines are nothing new to me, I'm not having more than usual. My stress level at work is good and low right now. And other than D I am at a fairly content space in my life. I love exercising and how great I'm feeling otherwise. My overall pain levels have fallen drastically (chronic back and foot issues from childhood)

I'm out of ideas and more than a bit confused as to why when I improved my diet and exercise I would go up. But I have had this 8 years that I know of and I suspect much longer than that, so perhaps my pancreas needs some help..... My naturopath is going to have a conference with the other docs in my clinic and see what they can come up with.

Any ideas you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

Ellie,

Hope you are feeling better. I guess one way to check this hypothesis of Brian's which I am leaning towards btw , is to eat the exact same thing and amt (if possible) when you don't have a migraine or nausea and test and see if your numbers are the same. If they aren't, you could probably attribute it to the sickness with confidence. But, hey, I feel you...this testing everything we put in our mouths gets old...the only thing that gets me through this self-defeating thought is to remember that watching my food intake is making me healthier, and I should strive for that, even if I wasn't diabetic. I'll be honest, if I hadn't been diagnosed, I'd probably still be abusing my body with junk-food. This illness has motivated me. It shouldn't have taken this but it did. Take care.

Ellie,

It sounds like you have made good progress on restricting your carbs. You did mention you still ate some potatoes and fruit, but they all seemed very small portions.

From your description, your pancreas is just pooped. Even the protein from chicken sends you up, and it takes hours to come down, never reaching a good fasting level. I know that you have said in the past that you want to put off medication. Let me make two suggestions.

Go zero carb - drop anything with carbs. no potatoes, no fruit. Try it for a day or so and see if your blood sugar normalizes

Anaerboic exercise - strength training, sprints, interval training, any physical activity hard enough you can't keep it up. 20 minutes a day. You already spend all this time exercising, try a different mix.

Let us know how it goes.

Brian,
Thanks for the suggestion,

I have the weekend to myself so I will try going zero carb, not that far off what I do already so should be doable (although for whatever reason my bread craving is going nuts right now, think I'm a bit low on Seretonin and my body is trying to boost it)

I can also try upping the intensity of resistance training, my water aerobics class is already kicking my ***. I can barely lift my feet or arms after an hour.

I will let you know what happens.

Update:

Well, I wish I had better numbers to report from going zero carb. I had two readings below 120 and they were still above 115.(out of 14). This is very unusual for me but typical of the last 3 weeks.

I'll be seeing my Doc on Thursday, so will discuss what to do now. I will continue low carb, high exercise but obviously something is not right.

thank you for all your support!

I have read all the answers here. The more I read the more frustrated I got. Maybe everyone but me understands all this, but I can't seem to get it down. I am the same. One day high, one low. Often there seems to be no rhyme or reason. Today seemed high, but I didn't eat much junk. I too am tired of fooling with it. Think the pump needs to go. Basals are not right and I know that, but no one (meaning Dr.) seems to care or help me adjust. Over 2 years and we are still "tweaking" it--if that is how you spell it. When do we get it and stop playing around--"change the 7 am up by .1, lower the 9 am, down the 7 am." I just made that up, but that is about how it goes. It is sort of like pick a time slot and change it by .1. Then next time we will pick another one. It never helps.

Ellie,

I caught the flu back in February. February 22nd to be exact. My morning blood sugar readings jumped 20 mg/dl higher. A week of readings all higher than I had seen all year. I got better within a week, but it took a month for my fasting numbers to get back down. You may be over the worst of it, but it may just take a little while to really get everything normalized. I know I really struggle with fasting numbers.

There may be also be something else going on and it certainly makes sense to talk to your doctor. In the meantime, I might also suggest a different exercise approach. I know that resistance training elevates my blood sugar. Why not try low intensity level aerobic training, walking for instance. You may find that this more effectively lowers your blood sugar. Take a reading before and after and see how it works.
