Exclamation One Touch Ultra 2 Problems?

My Father's blood sugar meter seems to be acting odd, which is more than a little annoying. He has a One Touch Ultra 2 meter. Over the past week or two now his meter has sometimes been correct (assuming so) and sometimes wrong. He has taken his blood sugar using both my meter (One Touch Ultra Mini) and his as a comparison over the past week now and sometimes the results are close to the same while at other times the results are highly different from one another. Any idea what could be wrong or if anyone else has been having trouble with this meter? Thanks.

Is the meter coded right for the strips (the number)? And has it been checked w/ the test solution?

Make sure that the codes are correctly set and that his fingers are clean. Also you may want to replace the battery. Check your local pharmacy to see if they have any of the calibration fluid.

Yes, the code was one of the first things we checked and everything is correct. He used solution on it not that long ago but perhaps he can try again. Also, I do not believe there is anything wrong with the battery. Thank you for your responses.

How different were the two readings? I've had a difference of 10-15 points from one meter to another. Blood sugar is constantly changing, so from one stick to another you will note SOME difference, even if you do them at the same time...or from the same fingerstick.

I find it helpful to use the same meter all the time (I use one all the time at work (one touch mini), one all the time at home (one touch ultra-II)), that way, regardless of how different it may be from another meter, i'll still be able to determine if i'm trending upwards or downwards.

At one point it was nearly 200 points higher, which was obviously wrong for him because he was extremely week. He took it again later and then it read 46 or 47.

With that much variance, I think its time he gets a new meter.

If you have CVS in your area, they give a free meter to diabetics quarterly....call and see when the giveaway is in your area. Also, watch the Sunday paper, there've been a lot of One Touch coupons recently.

Thank you . I will try and look into that. I think I might check the meter again to see if it is possibly the battery even though we already checked it once before. It's a shame when this meter has been such a good one.

Also, if it helps, I got an Ultra 2 on eBay for like $15 including shipping. I like having meters for home, office and several rooms of each, plus my purse. So have the one from the doctor and several that I bought, new from eBay.

Thanks. I'm sure if he asks his doctor she will give him another one. Great idea about ebay, though.

Check the freebies post to see if you can get a free meter or call the number for one-touch and they will send a free meter.

Actually if you call them and tell them of the problems they will probably send it priority.

the Ultra 2 is an excellent meter (get it checked against a lab fasting bg check when you get labs done)

call the 800 number on the back of your meter and walk thru the 'diagnostic' cheet sheet they use to rule out other problems

Consumer's Distributing rates the Ultra Mini #1 and the Ultra 2 #3 in their Sept issue

good luck!

Call One Touch. They will have a new free meter to you the next day- no problem at all.
