Disappointing bloodwork

Had my bloodwork done yesterday. My A1C was up to a 6.3, from a 5.6. BLEAH!

I really don't understand this. I've been testing 5-6 times per day, exercising, still losing weight, on the Byetta, Metformin, trying to eat like I'm supposed to. My post meal numbers are consistently under 140. Honest!

I am NOT HAPPY! I'm trying to tell myself, "Well, it could be a lot worse, and one test does not a lifetime make," but I'm still very disappointed.

My fasting BG on the other hand, was 101. Last time at the doc's, it was 126.

This stinks and I'm ticked.

A 6.3 is still excellent!

Amy, sorry you didn't get the results you expected. I know you work very hard at keeping things under control.

Keep in mind that you've had a lot of external stress lately...that (as well as physical stress/illness) can definitely affect blood sugars. I had much higher A1C when it was done at the time of my shingles event.

Also, even though we test often, we can still be getting elevations we're not catching, as we can't test constantly.

Hang in there and try not to be discouraged. The next one will be better!...and this one's not bad, just not what you expected.

Obesity and Type 2 are strongly associated. Most people assume that Obesity is the cause and Diabetes the effect. It is equally valid to suggest that the underlying metabolic disorder which leads to the Type 2 causes the Obesity.

Even When We Are Good

Yes, other factors have caused my quarterly blood work to go up when I expected it to go down. You just have to keep on keeping on with the good hard work you have been doing. Don't be too hard on yourself, that never helps.....

That IS really a good A1C but I understand we never like to see it go up! Try not to be too discouraged...I'm very hard on myself so I kind of relate...but just realize that there are lots of folks here who dream of having a 6.3 for their A1C. It took me a long time to get that kind of number.

Don't overanalyze this. There are factors which cause HbA1c to be a coarse indicator of control. Your readings are as valuable as the HbA1c in telling you how you are doing. You do know that as your control tightens, your red blood cells live longer, causing an inflation of the HbA1c? Did you know that a higher hematocrit inflates HbA1c? Did you know the error in the HbA1c could be 20%?

Take this latest reading as just another rough piece of supporting information, not a precise indicator of how you really are. Overall, you should be very proud of your control.

Thanks SO much for all the encouragement, folks. I really appreciate it!

And no, Brian, I actually DIDN'T know that about tighter control means longer-lived red blood cells and that inflating the A1C. Or about the hematocrit, either. I appreciate the information. It really does make me feel better.

Thanks again, folks. The support does help.

Amy that sucks and I would be ticked off too!
I know how hard this all is and after getting my first ever A1C result since diagnosis I would be pretty annoyed if it had gone up after all the hard work.
I do understand...I have no explanation but hang in there...
