Diabetic (?) Recipes Vent

Grrr!!!!. Here we go again. The current issue of dLife has a recipe Diabetic Recipes | Almost Better than Sex Cake listed as one of the top dLife recipes.

This cake has 34 grams of carbs per serving. (20 of them sugar) . No wonder newbies are confused.

I am going to unsubscribe from this garbage.

I agree Sparrow. I would not have recognized this as a recipe that is diabetes friendly.

(sarcasm alert)

But but but they used nonfat milk and nonfat yogurt ...

... that make it low fat and therefore OK doesn't it?

Good gawds is that site affiliated with a drug company or what?

A cake recipe that has sugar, go figure. The site has a chef who does lower carb things as their kid is diabetic. But my guess is the majority of their audience is not low carb followers. It may take a generation or two before the lower carb thing becomes the norm. But a lot of us indulge in cake per my recent poll so if it is less bad for us, isn't that a good thing.

Egad. What are these people thinking? Oh, right. They're not. Got it.

I'll have to copy it into the recipes section, but I saw a great recipe for coconut macaroon cheesecake that could be very easily adapted with Splenda. Not sure what the altered nutrition count would be, but with only 1/3 cup of sugar to start with, that's mainly for taste, and Splenda would be an easy sub.

I'll copy it and make it and report the results!

This week, I saw some sort of diabetes magazine in the grocery store that seemed to have lasagna on the front cover. I guess you have the lasagna and follow it up with that cake for dessert.

Here are the dLife guidelines for what they will publish as a diabetic friendly recipe

After reading their guidelines, I do feel a bit better about it, but would still caution anyone to be very, very careful about making something with that many carbs per serving. Unless that's all you plan to eat for that meal. LOL.

P.S. You could cut the carb count significantly in that recipe by using s/f instant pudding and Hood's Calorie Countdown milk. I think there are also s/f cake mixes available. There were a couple of indignant comments at the bottom of the recipe, too.

I see this kind of stuff all the time in so-called diabetic recipe books, and also at the ADA's "Eating Right" and "Recipe of the Day" site. It's easier for us who know better than to even make the stuff let alone eat it. It's the newly diagnosed people that concerns me. They think because an authoritative diabetic site, magazine or a licensed dietician recommends it, that it's okay to eat. While some who shoot insulin can probably compensate if they choose to eat that stuff, many like myself who takes a pill wouldn't touch it. Jaye

This always gets my goat!

I am just stunned to see and think about what is considered "diabetic".

I call the ADA diet the Aids Death Abruptly Diet.

Every time I pick up a "diabetic" cookbook and thumb through it I end up in shock. It's no wonder over 90% aren't in control of their BG.

And please! Do yourself a favor and never ever order a "diabetic" meal, (airlines and such.) I've never seen a plate more full of tasteless carbs.

I do watch the dlife show and their chef Michel Nischan's recipes are low carb as far as I've seen. So, I will give him credit for that.

His son is T1 diabetic, so I guess he's learned to make foods low-carb and appealing for him.

Like everyone else, i'm amazed at what some consider "diabetic-friendly" cooking/recipes.
